Where in New Mexico did the Santa Fe have shop facilities, circa 1900-1914? Was there anything close by to Portales?

Portales was close to Clovis, a major Santa Fe junction point.

I think roundhouse and minor servicing facilities in Clovis, and not even sure if the Belen cutoff route was there in 1900-1915...but not "shops" as in heavy rebuilding. Matter of fact, I don't think anyplace in New Mexico.

Are you trying to find a place to use a Walther's "shop" kit?

the AT&SF stored a 4-8-4 (2925) and a 2-10-4 (5021) until the mid 80's in Clovis, they were donated to the California Railroad Museum...i don't think that they are on display

Tracing some family genealogy. Several family members working their way west, late 1800s to pre-WWI, via RR boilermaker/machinist trades. Trying to find where they might have worked, knowing factually they did live in certain places along that trail.

If you have access to Sanborn's maps, you might try a town by town search. Sanborn's covered most towns of any size in America from late 1800s to mid 20th century with maps so detailed, they show every building in 1 map inch to 50 feet prototype scale, with type of construction, maps updated every 10 or 15 years.

I have immediate access only to Sanborn's maps for Texas via the local public library subscription online and also via the local university online open to me as a grad student.

At one time, I did have access to Sanborn maps. That password ceased working about two years back.

As for shops, it was not just roundhouses at major division points. Many times railroads had minor servicing facilities at in between places, on branches, etc. Such as a small engine house area to service local switchers, local power. On the AT&SF, I'd have no idea where to look.

Santa Fe Class 5 shoppings (heavy repair) were still being done on steamers in Albuquerque until the 50's. Facilities photos seem to show a backshop behind the roundhouse.

First reply to a message on this list -

1900-1915 or so the locations on the east side of the state where there would have been engine houses would have been Carlsbad, Roswell, Clovis,(all AT&SF by 1915) Tucumcari (SP/RI) and Clayton (FW&DC).

The Belen cut-off was opened by 1910 and the facilities at Clovis were the largest of the ones mentioned above.

Here is a link to some pics of ATSF roundhouses. Note the third Albuquerque photo, it appears to be a backshop behind the partially destroyed RH. Below are some views of the model of the Albq facility that I built:

That unknown roundhouse view, where it's burned down, has me wondering- How many such facilities suffered that same fate in steam days?
