    Hi,

I live in Edinburgh, Scotland. I have just retired and interested in setting up an N Scale layout. Whilst trolling around the various forums I came across an interesting and informative debate about some electronic issues to do with the KATO Amherst 2005 Track Plan (the one I am going to use as it happens) and decided, this is the forum for me!
I hope to contribute to the forum myself in due course but I need to master the basics first and then we will see. In the meantime I would appreciate any advice going. I have a 5'x3' layout in mind but 6'6"x3' is a possibility (space constraints). The main rolling stock easily available in the UK is Dapol and Farish and I would be interested in hearing about other brands and whether or not I can get them delivered here?

Hi Tony, welcome aboard! You are definitely in the right place for information and advice, but the majority here model US railroads. No problem for track or electronics queries:) .

I am from England, but now live in Slovenia and model SZ railways. Do you intend modelling just UK trains? Or would you be happy with American prototypes? The quality and range is excellent and readily available in the UK, and very suitable for small layouts, especially if you like switching (shunting in English!)

Keep in touch with thoughts and any questions you have.

Welcome aboard, Tony, from one who has roots in Glasgow! I don't know that we have many that can help you with availability of manufacturers in your area, but as for the rest, ask and you shuld be pleasantly surprised at the results. Depending, as has been noted, on what prototype you are interested in, perhaps investigate some of the e-tailers who advertise with us?

    Hi Tony,

    Welcome to TrainBoard.

Not being familiar with the Amherst Track plan I had to look it up

Could the electrically problem be related to the switches? Are Unitrack switches power routing?

If they are then you may need a bunch of feeders to take care of the problem.

One thing that I see missing is a connection to the outside world.

    Hi Gary,

Thanks for the welcome. I don't personally have a problem with this layout 'yet', as I haven't started to build it. The discussion I was referring to that was so interesting - and the main reason for joining the forum - was inputted by another forum member called denm31, on Feb 5 2013. The discussion, which goes into some detail, and includes the use of feeders, will certainly help me as I may experience similar problems when the time comes! Thank you for your input and please keep in touch.

    Hi Alan,

Thanks for the welcome. I haven't yet decided what rolling stock to go for but I'm open to all possibilities and American Prototypes could quite easily be on the list - I will let you know when I've made my choice.

Thanks for the offer of advice - I shall let you know when I start!

    Hi Eagle2,

Although living in Edinburgh, Shetland before that (30+ years in all) I originally hail from Dublin. Thanks for the welcome and advice. I shall certainly look at the retailers and maybe find some inspiration on what prototypes to model.

I remember a shop called Mac's Models, I think, somewhere in Scotland. Don't know if they are still around. Were a bit pricey but a decent range.

Welcome aboard, Tony, besides Archangels Gabriel, Michael and Rafael, archangel was the original code word for the U-2 spyplane program.

    :)
