Greetings, I was an HO modeler from mid 60s to mid 80s but as a result of moving for my job, long hours at work and new family I wasn’t active and all my HO models and track have remained packed up. I retired in 2014 and recently my oldest grandson (4) has shown a lot of interest in trains. I am using that as an excuse to return to the hobby but decided for space reasons go to N Scale. Not sure that N scale was the best choice with my old eyes though. I always had an interest in trains, my dad was a Fireman and Engineer and my grandfather was a depot agent. My earliest memories are sitting on my grandfathers lap in the depot and the Morse ticking away in the background. I was fortunate enough to start as a “summer only” hire as a fireman and after over 42yrs I retired, it was a long but mostly enjoyable summer. I hope to learn from the experienced folks here and possibly contribute.
Welcome! You'll find N Scale is a lot different than it used to be. Age 4 is a little young for N Scale, but it's not impossible. I'd recommend starting small (no pun intended). There are lower cost "entry level" items out there for reasonable prices that can be located with a little patience. And of course you're returning to the hobby also
Hi Steve, welcome. I agree, N is not recommended for a four-year old. My sons enjoyed HO 50 years ago. The track was sturdy and wheel flanges interacted firmly when rerailing. N is too delicate. It would be frustrating for him. Just the opinion of a modeler in all gauges for over eighty years.
Welcome to TrainBoard Steve! N is a good choice and you will find a great community of N scalers here. Glad to have you aboard!
