I used to have an N scale rail layout (mid '70s) some parts of which I recently came across. My grandson was pretty amazed that the little trains had once run. My power pack and loco's though are sadly dead.

I'd like some advice, if possible, in selecting a manufacturer of reasonably priced, decent quality power supply and equivalent loco's to see if my grandson is truly interested. No junk please, but also not multi-hundred dollar investments either. I'd stay with the hobby if he's into it, but we'll both move on to something else if he quickly gets bored.

Thanks in advance for any and all input.

Some of it might depend on if you're looking for steam or diesel. For steam probably Bachman, for diesel look for Atlas Trainman. In either case, hopefully you and your grandson have a great time and you'll share some of the experiences!

    Welcome to TrainBoard!

Don't toss your old locos. Set them aside for now. They likely can be salvaged at a later date.

For a power supply, search up Model Rectifier Corporation. ("MRC") They've been around for ages, and are rock solid.

For motive power, definitely look at Atlas diesels. (There are others, also very good, but this would be an excellent starting point.) Again, Atlas is good quality and have been around for a long time, going back to before your mid-1970's date. Steam in N scale can be a hit and miss deal. You'll get many suggestions.

If you have further questions, don't hesitate to ask. Just hop over to our N Scale Forum and post.

Welcome aboard, KRH. I'm not a modeler so cannot be of assistance in your quest to find new power sources, but I think you will have great fun with your grandson if he takes to the hobby. I tried to get my grandson into my interest, real steam, but now he is grown and had lost interest.

Hi KRH, welcome. Glad you're on board, and back into modeling. I'm sure your grandson will enjoy being with you.
