Well, today was the ground breaking cerimony for the Eastern Mountain Railway. I was able to get most of the grid bench work completed. I will complete this later in the week. :D The subroadbed will be of cookie cutter design on risers. This is the first time I've this method. Who else out there has done this and what are some of things I'lll need to be cautious with?

Wish me luck with my new endeavor.

I wish you luck, I have never done a layout with cookie cutter benchwork yet. I hope to someday when I get a layout room though!

I looked at your trackplan on your link and it looks fun. Are you going to have very deep scenery?

Take your time when you mark the sections you're going to cut. Otherwise, it's pretty easy. You might find yourself moving parts of your grid to make locating a riser easier, but that's all part of the fun, and helps to make a sturdier railroad.

Best of luck! The only thing I can think of for you to be careful with is:- inserting the fill in parts for the places where you removed sub roadbed due to one level crossing over another.
Make sure that the transition from the main sub roadbed to the replacement piece is smooth and has no abrupt change in the grade.
When I did it I used a support piece, under the sub roadbed, longer than necessary - just to keep the sub roadbed as smooth as I could make it.

No matter what stage of building, remember:

    Measure twice, cut once

Thanks for the advice. I don't know how many times I have heard "measure twice, cut once" but I always seem to undercut something on my projects.

Robert - Yes the scenery is going to be deep. The elevated track towrds the back of the layout is going to be a trestle that will be about 5" high.

Eric. I like your layout plan. I agree with measure twice and cut once. Although that never seems to work for me. I can measure several times and cut and the part comes out either to long or to short. Usually if it is to long I measure how much to cut off and cut just a little under and it turns out too short. Murphys law I guess. lol
