I agree with Tileguy, but as he suggested, I will only be in this house for like 2-3 years, and didn't want to get into a complicated around the walls plan, as I have to finance this empire on my meager budget... I could do an around the walls with a drop down or liftout section , but I am subscribing to the KISS principle. I could have a lot of run with around the walls, the room being 11x10'3" The closet has no walls, just sliding doors that can be taken down somehow.... Some staging potential back there. I think I'll save the Steven's pass route for my retiree in my new huge basement of my own house. For now, I'll stick to the High Prairie sub, as I previously planned. I'll kick around a plan for around the walls, but no duckunders, just a liftout or dropdown. [edited] Here's the room, not to scale with the measurements I have: This is the first plan, with liftout: Whaddaya'll think? [ 11. May 2003, 23:31: Message edited by: HemiAdda2d ]
Of the revised plans, I'm voting for number two. With the open spaces in the room. That third option with it's peninsula, might be more in the way, than beneficial. Boxcab E50
Looks like a lot of yard with not a lot of mainline to me. I like the way you've got your mainline. Just a single track with some sidings and spurs will make for some good scenes. There just seems to be too much yard for the amount of mainline you've got though...at least to me. I'd find a way to limit the yard to just one wall...
If you are going to be moving in the future, you could build this one like an Ntrak Modular Layout,Built in sections that wire together easily it could move with you.Just another piece of furniture
Regarding the yard...I like the latest one better. With that said though, if you WANT to run your yard along two walls then by all means do so. Yard operations may be your main interest...and I'm certainly no expert on layout design as I'm new at this. It just seemed like a LOT of yard on the other ones for the amount of track you had.
Hoss & Tileguy, The layout I presently have, and will adapt to this room is modular already. As for the yard, I like a large yard, but I have no space to do it, unless my entire layout is a giant yard.. What I really want is a place to store/show off locos, MOW equip. and cabeese.
I Like that last one!! It gives you a good yard a long mainline run and some operation potential if you want it.Seems to have the Elements you were looking for and with the view block you get to pull off a couple surprise entries to boot.If n ya wanna show off them trains, i think youve got a winner on all counts
OK, more staging! I like to have lots of staging.... using visible yards for staging sucks when you have other options.
I certainly don't see any problems with this latest plan! With the scenario you've previously proposed, it seems to fit well. Boxcab E50
Ok, Thanks to BN86 on the Atlas board, I have a newer improved plan. There is a paper mill and woodchip facilities in the upper LH corner, building flats for an apple packing house, manufacturing, etc. along the left wall. The yard and engine facility has been completely rebuilt, more hidden staging in lieu of a passing siding, and lumber and grain industries in the bottom of the plan. 16' of benchwork has been laid now, and more to be finished tonight.
I agree, but I think I may add a passing siding along the hidden staging. Or I may just double-track the whole durned thang!
Either way, I'd agree. A siding would add some operational possibilities. Double track with crossovers as well. Also, the latter would allow you to display two nice trains of your modeling efforts at the same time. Looking forward to some further photos! Boxcab E50
The benchwork is 80% complete. I have a small section to make to fill in a corner, and then the custom corner-to-liftout piece... I laid another 17 feet of benchwork last night. [ 20. May 2003, 13:45: Message edited by: HemiAdda2d ]
The benchwork is completed! I have another 2" layer of foam to add on top,a nd build the liftout, but I'm almost ready to run trains!!!!
I have an around the walls setup, with no track yet laid, but I have a question: I plan to mount my command station for my DCC system midway on one wall, and run the bus wires both directions from it. Total run one way should be not much more than 20'. Does 14AWG wire need to be used for this? I have 60' red/wht stranded 16 AWG, and 150' of red/wht solid 18AWG. I also have some 20-22ga stranded stuff for feeders. The way I figure, I use the 16 ga stuff for bus wires, the 18 ga stuff for long distance feeders, and the smallest stuff for light feeders. Or use the 18 AWG for short buses, and the 22 ga stuff for feeders. I will be using DCC, as I mentioned, with a 5A power supply. Below is the room dimensions, and above a few posts is the latest plan.
