My name is Stephen and I now live in Durham, NC with my three girls and wife. I have loved trains all my fifty three years, especially when my grandfather took me to Harman Yards in NY. He was the Chief Draftsman for the NY Central. I have built four layouts the last one just over twelve years ago. I took a break for many years with military service and life got in the way. I am now building my last layout which is 28ft long x 3 ft w x 14ft long x 3 ft wide 14 ft long x 3 ft wide with two sections 6ft w x 8 ft long, one section 5 ft long x 6 ft wide and one other section that is 8 ft long x 4 ft wide. It is 4 ft high, has four main lines, three yards (coach, freight and freight/staging area). It was started about three months ago. By the way it is HO scale. My 86 year young father is helping build this layout. It is on face book if you want to see it: CLSC and W Railroad. Let me know what you think. In addition to all of this I am a member of the NMRA and I am in the Mid Eastern District. I look forward to learning as well as helping each and everyone.
Father and son RR's always sound like wonderful things, and I guess that's no matter how young they happen to be...Good to have you with us!
Hi Stephen, Welcome to the TrainBoard, we're glad that you are on board. My mother took me to the Harmon area when I was young, but we weren't lucky enough to have an NYC employee in the family. We had to park on the bluff overlooking the engine terminal and watch engines being changed, cleaned, refueled, and all other neat stuff. If you're considering modeling the Harmon engine terminal area, I hope you include the engine reversing loop that bridged over all the tracks north of the terminal. Apparently Harmon never had the real estate for a turntable, so used the reversing loop to turn engines for their northbound runs. Please keep us posted with your and your son's progress...photos are best.
Welcome aboard! Nice to welcome another member with ties to the New York Central. Will your model pike be based on the Central?
That is some pretty awesome work on both the old and new layout. I have always wanted a seperate building for a workshop and layout. Tipping my hat to you and your father!
Hi Stephen. Welcome to Trainboard! I wish I still had my dad around to work with. What a wonderful way to build your last pike!
