Does anyone know if there are any N scale models available of extra large metal grain bins that are approximately 60ft wide and 60-80 ft tall? I am modeling a recently built ethanol plant and I need 3 of these along with an assortment of spent grain bins which I will build out of PVC as they are a lot smaller in diameter and concrete. They should be relatively easy to scratch build. The bins at the plant are made by Sukup and Brock. Thanks
I believe there are bins made for HO scale that might due for the larger bins. If you can live with the corrugated siding being oversized. http://www.rixproducts.com/6280304.htm
Maybe you could start with a round oatmeal box? They seem to be about 50' ~ 60' N Scale feet in diameter.
If nothing available that fits the bill I would scratch build them out of 4" PVC pipe or couplings. Lightly sand the outside then spray with gray auto primer then spray with an aluminum or steel color. Seams could be added but I would leave them off because unless they were done correctly they would really detract from the finished item.
I agree scratchbuilding would be an option.I think I would wrap the pipe with a printed paper sheet of corugated material,I think the overall effect of this would be acceptable.
Thanks for all of the replies everyone. This is the one I leaned toward as I thought about it after the mention of the oatmeal container. For some reason, as soon as I read it, my mind clicked that I have about 10-15 pictures of the silos and can use Photoshop to manipulate them to the right size and then print out the picture to wrap the PVC or other suitable diameter parts with. Thanks for the great ideas on my first post to the forums.
