    Hi all,
Need some kind persons help with a small problem. I bought today one Mantua 2-6-6-2, second hand, it runs very well, but I need to strip it down for a re-paint.

What I would like is an exploded drawing of one of these as there wasn't one with it. Having never had my hands on one of these before, I really would like to see what goes where and why.

    Many thanks.

Paul showed this loco to me just after he acquired it at the show in Derby, He said we would be seeing pictures of it AFTER he had repainted it! Guess he couldn't wait :D

Impressive looking locomotive, Paul, and good to see you again [IMG]

    Paul,

I used to have one of those exploded "parts" drawings from my Mantua 2-6-6-2. It was a kit when I got it. I'll look and see if I might still have the paperwork. :D

Paul, I opened mine, and there is no parts list with the engine! I bought mine brand new too.
I guess Mantua is going down hill like the rest, saving money. There is a card showing where to add oil, and an almost worthless guarantee slip. It was still factory sealed when I opened it. Sorry, we are in the same boat.

Here is a photo of mine first time out of the box, not yet run.

    Paul,

I know have a parts catalog with exploded diagrams of all the Mantua steam engines, including the 2-6-6-2. Once I can get our scanner figured out (it was recently given to us) I'll send you a copy of the pages you need.

Since this catalog is no longer available from Mantua, I'm perfectly happy to do the same for any member of TrainBoard. [IMG]

I thought Mantua went out of business recently. At least that's what the announcement was about some time ago.

Mantua ceased production of Model Railroad items in October 2001. I believe their other business ventures are still going. I know all their remaining stock was sold, but I haven't heard who purchased their parts inventory. You can still find quite a few good deals on older HO engines on eBay. It's a shame Mantua quit making trains, because their steam engines were quite nice, even those made under the Tyco name. I'd stock more than the single one I have in my store, if I could still get them.

Paul, can you send me an e-mail? I managed to delete every message I've received from you in the past, and I didn't save your e-mail address. I should warn you, there are four pages coming to you, and they're not small!!!

Thanks all, what I could do with also is a Can motor and flywheel plus a pair of universal joints to replace the old motor and rubber tubes. Anyone changed the old motor? if so, what is the number of it and where did you buy it from please.

Nice colors on that locomotive! But I am sure you have a greater scheme planned for it. Does this mean we will see short mixed freights moving from the docks to the Camps?

I don't know about parts...you might try 7600EM_1. He is pretty good with these sorts of things.

I should have shafts, and whatnot to fit that Mantua loco... sadly I can't say which model number you got Paul.... Mantua made 3 or 4 different versions of that 2-6-6-2! The first one was a "half-breed" between TYCO and Mantua, which had a really weird drive in it with one motor and ran length-wise to the boiler and a real mechanical nightmare! The motors in them were worthless being of the same type used in the TYCO's so-called "Best" power traction-line. I believe that was the first of the variation and then went onto a geared motor shaft kinda like the first "straight-forward" Mantua loco where their was no TYCO mechanics involved in its production. Which I believe was in like the late 1970's to the early 1980's....

Then you may have the latest one which had a centered motor, with the rubber flex drives and double sided motor "shafts on each end of the motor" and possibly pretty strong with a double shaft Sagami, or even a Mabachi can motor...

As I've read it sounds like you may have the open frame motor.... Which isn't the greatest believe me! I ran into some really good motors for this type thing and I tell ya I over done myself! I took a Riv Big Boy thats one of my EM-1's that I had repowered and being me dumped in 2 of these motors.... One motor per set of drivers and uped the weight to top out at 2 and a half pounds in weight.... And now talk about an over kill! HA I don't need a helper with him anymore!

But I tell ya Paul, once you get into the loco itself, do yourself a favor and disassemble it in sections, such as the front set of drivers first and then the rear set, etc, once you gotten that far start by watching what your removing and go to disassembling the rods and all with a 00-80 hex head retractor, "kinda like a screwdriver, only for nuts and bolts" and keep each side separate.... They were made for a right and left.... DO NOT worry so much as to front and rear set of drivers being that they are identical on the Mantua's articulateds. But anyone that reads this DO NOT think the same way for the Rivarossi loco's! The Challengers, and Big Boys are really tedious! They had differences from the front set of drivers to the rear set of drivers on the rods... and again right and left.

Paul, Its not to much diffrent then your Shays! You've built them, so, I would think or imagine that it would be alot simpler to disassemble the Mantua compared to the Shay.... The Shays are way more complex in design....

Just watch what you take off and all and remember where it came from, if you must, label the leaft and right parts. as you take them off... I have a Mantua 2-6-6-2 thats in parts, that I do believe was one of the first Mantua, loco's "at the time" that was offered in both kit and ready to run form...I'll see if I can help you with it being I also got a lemon! Without instructions! :D :D So its going to call for alot of brain work....
