Hello I have built a frame based on a door (83 x 39) a few years ago, but haven't decided yet what layout to build (it will be Kato unitrack But I would like to avoid the basic oval....I'm looking for some interesting idea. and I can also consider to add a extension (for a yard for example?) Thanks
If you perform a Google search for hcd track plans, you will find a lot of them. Most of them allow for continuous running, but they are usually much more than a simple oval. By using scenic dividers, tunnels, view blocks, and twice-around track plans -- and by not laying track parallel to the edges of the door -- you can do a lot to conceal the true nature of even an oval-type design. - Jeff
if you don't want continuous running, you could make a turn around loop on one side of your layout, with maybe a small yard in it, and on the other side some industries. Robbert
My layout is not on a door or number of doors but, if you have space for a second door, it could be at 90 degrees to your existing, at one end, to make a J or L shape. Mine then has the ends together, so it's an end to end. It's about 96 inch by 66 inch. Put a scenic break or two in it, and it looks a lot better. The hidden staging is behind the back scene. it's hard to get away from the oval on a small layout, especially if you want continuous running capabilities. My Marias Pass is an oval design, however, I also designed the benchwork, backdrop/divider, scenery, and trackplan to optimize the "illusion" of having something other than the perfect oval shape. Adding an "S" curve, and slight bends to the straight sections of the mainline can benefit you greatly. here is a bird's eye view of the Marias Pass. 4'x10' www.nscaleaddiction.blogspot.com
I drew this Unitrack plan for a 32x60 area, but realized to much track. Your area may add just enough space to make it interesting.
Here is a small N layout which could probably be fitted on a hollow-core door plus extension to one side for engine terminal and hidden staging.
I have multiple door layouts on my trackplan page; some are ovals and some are a lot more. http://www.cke1st.com/m_train2.htm#doorplan
I like your sketch. My only suggestion is that where you have the double trackage making it single track. Here's my reasoning: A rural area probably wouldn't have double trackage and while I see why you put it there for operations, since you're running point to point it it'll make you think about where you spot things so you can get back. Just my suggestions. I like you plan alot.
My suggestion would be to allow enough room for scenery. I built my first HCD layout and while it gives a good continuous operation, there is too much track and if I had it to do over I would simplify it. I have 2 reversing loops, a small yard and a few spurs for industries.this was built on a 30" wide door. It's great for portability though - moved a couple times with it so far. I'm planning an expansion for next year when I can move into a condo and have more room.
