I have just successfully installed an ESU Lok-Sound decoder (#58820) in my n-scale ConCor Pioneer Zephyr. I am pleased with the result, but less so with the manual (the full manual, not the Quick Start Guide) from ESU's web site. I need to re-map three of the function keys, usually a fairly straightforward process with other decoders. I am pretty new to DCC, and this is my first ESU decoder, though I have a couple of DigiTrax and SoundTraxx that I have installed and programmed.

It's probably just me, but I find the ESU manual utterly confusing. If anyone out there has experience with ESU decoders and would be willing to walk me through the process, I'd be grateful. Here is what I need to do:

    1. F3 is assigned to a coupler sound, which I don't need for the Zephyr. I want to make F3 trigger the brake sounds, which are currently assigned to F4.

    2. I want to assign F4 and F5 to the two station announcements that the manual says exist on this decoder, announcement 1 in sound slot 7 volume cv#307 and announcement 2 in sound slot 14 volume cv#363.

Thanks in advance for any help. Stay safe!

Use DecoderPro. It takes care of all the additional settings in the background that need to be done just to assign a function to a key.

Thanks for the suggestion, Pieter. It dies look easy to use, but unfortunately, my DCC setup (MRC Tech 6 Soundstation) is not supported according to JMRI's web site. I have a smallish layout and am just getting started.

You need to look at the chapter about functions if you have to do it 'manually'. If soundloc 5 then p70. I think if you print the tables ( about 6 of them),and with pen & paper you should get the sequence right. There is a lot of looking up a value or counting rows in one table and then cross referencing in others before you change a CV. The other thing is you have to program CV32 every time before you change one of the CVs on the tables. The values are also on the tables. From the tables it seems you can't move sound slots but you can move the F-keys around them.

you can download the Loc sound programmer program and load the sound file you are using make the changes you want and go into the dropdown and look at changed cv's it will list what cv's need to be changed and to what values also. I have the program set up if you want to email me the info on the file and what you want to do i can try to assist you with a list of what needs to be changed also
