As a former scout myself, I found this very cool... Sunol Depot Again Offers Railraoading Merit Badges SUNOL, CA -- Last year I reported on the Niles Canyon Railway's Boy Scout Railroad Merit Badge program, and because the program was so successful, there is still a waiting list from that session. I have just received word from railroading merit badge counselor David Harris that again they are offering this popular program. Because there is already a waiting list, Scouts who have completed a part of their requirements will have priority. The next sessions will be held this Wednesday, Aug24 and Sep30 at the Railroad Museum at the Sunol Depot. Each session will begin at 08:30 and end at 16:30. Their Web site, http://ncry.org/rrmb.shtml, lists the requirements. "We are working through our waiting list and going to scout meetings and Merit Badge Extravaganzas to help Scouts get some of their requirements signed off, besides just having our sessions at the railroad," David wrote. If you are interested in having a merit badge counselor visit your troop meeting to sign off on railroad merit badge requirements, send an e-mail with the date, time, troop number and meeting location to railfan@baylug.org and they will contact you to confirm a date. - Victoria Christian, The Contra Costa Times
I'm a former Scout too - Troop 174 & Boy Scout Troop 92 / Englewood, CO :shade: :shade: :shade: :shade:
Man, if they had this when I was a scout I probably would have kept going. Quit as a Cub Scout because there was no railroad merit badge John
As a Scout leader and railfan, I can say that this is a great opportunity for Scouts and railfans (hopefully to develop the railfan in Scouts). We have a RR merit badge counselor available too... Harold
I too am a Scouter (Adult Leader), and am also a Railroading Merit Badge Councilor. I had 13 students at our Merit Badge Trail Drive this past spring. If any of you took a look at the requirements for this, one was to compete in a switching contest. To that end, I built a timesaver layout for the young men to operate. I had fun and so did they.
Charlie, Me too with the badges and aviation career. Never was a railroader as my dad was. Aviation was the big one. I seem to recall earning the Railroading merit badge back in the 1950's when I was a scout.
