Hi all I would like some advice/construct critism as I am in the process of planning a NA layout, and want to to give it a fictious road name. It is to be based on New England routes and would like to be able to paint up my own colours. As I live in the UK and have never been to the area, I wondered if the name I have got would be suitable, and the names are... New England Joint Railroad New England States Railroad Great New England Railroad New England Wagontrain Railroad I look forward to your thoughts Regards Tom
Make a collection of prototype names. Look at Fallen Flags. This way you will find many examples. For my WT I looked for a town. With Encarta I found there're over twelve towns "Westport" in the USA. I wanted a Terminal RR because I've not many towns, only switching districts. In the LDSig group there were some articles about naming a rr. Here's the Primer: http://www.vetmed.auburn.edu/~smithbf/BFSpages/LDSIGprimer/ Wolfgang
Hi Wolfgang Thanks for the reply and links. It has given me more to go on. I hadn't thougth about naming after towns etc. I like the look of vermont so will loosely base it on this. Hmmm more to think about. :teeth: Regards Tom
Tom- Towns, geographic areas, landmarks, lakes, rivers, etc. I.E. Lake Champlain & Bennington Railroad
Hi Fothergill I have tentatively come up with Connecticut River Railroad.. now I know this was already done, but as it got consumed by B&M and disappeared very early on I have decided that with modellers licence I have reopened the company and have given it a new lease of life! :teeth: and I like the name, just about captures it for me. Would this be plausable? Regards Tom
Good Name For modeling, I think this is very common. There were many, many railroads in the USA around 1900. Most did not survive; some were never built (just paper companies). I like the "Connecticut River" name very much.
Connecticut Valley RR Green Mountain and Worchester Bennington Northern (the BN has been done before, I think. ) Too many possibilities. Good choice of locale.
My thoughts: Connecticut River Valley RR - CVR just sounds good when you say it out loud. You may also consider what kinds of industries and era you want to model. In general the further north you go there is a lumber based industry. The further south there is a more of agrarian and manufacturing base. I happen to like the red / grey color scheme of the Bangor and Aroostook. So: The Bangor, Aroostook and Southern or “BAS” Bangor, Aroostook and Harford – BAH –
Ironic, I'm modeling the Conn. River Valley but as B&M in 1977. When I lived in NH I had a fictious RR that ran on what was left of the B&M North line from Concord to Potter Place. The RR ran through the county of Merrimack, so I named it the Merrimack Valley RR. Conn. River Line sounds nice. Jim
Hi all, well as a bit of an update the CRR Connecticut River Railroad is born again, only a hundred years later. Thanks for all you idea and comments they were really helpful in helping me decide. I had gone through some other ideas before, but this one feels "just right" :teeth: I have also come up with some logos and liveries.. and some loco liveries It has been fun learning about the history of the railroads, and I hope to some day get to see the real thing. If anyone is interested they can see progress at CRR's website Once again Thanks to all. Regards Tom
Hi Jim Thanks for that. The hardest part for me is to know what the senery should be like as I have no way of knowing other that the internet, and quite often that just doesnt give the feel of the area. But I have been scouring google for everything.. amazing what you can find.. I am happy now I have a na,e and somethine to start with to keep me focused. I have a part plan drawn up and will submit it for everyones comments :teeth: Regards Tom
As far as a logo goes, believe me, make it simple. Use two colors and make one of those black. Don't use white. That is just a cryptic review of all my decal hassles!
Hey Flash I plan to have them made by comercial company here in UK so that should be ok shouldnt it, its not like I am going to bang them out on my home printer mg::teeth: Tell me more of your trials and tribulations.. Tom
On the white business- If you have a commercial printer, I will give him a boatload of stuff to do if he can print in white ink. If so, please PM me with details and cost or print it here since I know there are dozens of people here on Trainboard that would use this service.
Delaware & Hudson Western (D&HW) That would run in the Colorado Rockies and regions outward from there. :shade: :shade: :shade: :shade:
Tom, two books to consider, Boston and Maine, three colorful decades of New England Railroading. By Robert Willoughby Jones and published by Trans-Anglo Books and Boston and Maine In Color by Jeremy F. Plant and Jeffrey G. Plant, published by Morning Sun. Both books show the Conn. River Div. and have helped me with scenic ideas. My layout as small as it is has a river and a large hill to be covered in fall foliage of coarse.:shade:
Ah yes, the Suncook Valley Flyer that went from Suncook to Center Barnstead. Long gone by the 1950's if I remember right. One of the tresstles still survives on my families property. By chance I found a picture of the center cab sitting in front of the Pittsfield NH station at a train show here in Champaign. I had to buy as I had a relative that worked that RR. The picture is framed and in the livingroom along with my other B&M memorabila. Jim
"There was one- nicknamed the Blueberry Express. Nice road, hung around 75 years or so" Until they got squashed by the competition?
