After the N&W was made a subsidiary of Norfolk Southern, it remained an independent operating company. I am trying to find the date for when this was finally absorbed into NS. One source tells me it was October 25, 1987. Can anyone verify for me? Note: The corporation itself was not absorbed at that time. That came a few years later, 1998(?). PS- I have contacted N&WHS. Surprisingly, they did not know!
The following page on the N&WHS website states that "Finally on September 1, 1998 Norfolk & Western's corporate existence ended as it was merged into Norfolk Southern Corporation." https://www.nwhs.org/about_nw.php It that what you wanted to know?
When I worked in industry, our NS man gave me a nice paperweight commemorating Norfolk Southern's birthday and within the clear Lucite block is a little golden spike, the NS logo and a date of June 1, 1992. It ends up that this was the date that NS was created as a holding company to acquire both N&W and SOU. From what I read, the the actual merger took place 12/31/1990 when N&W became a subsidiary of the SOU and SOU changed its name to Norfolk Southern Railway.
Thanks, but I did already have that date- being the corporate absorption I had noted. Am seeking the date operations were absorbed, which was much earlier. The two events being done separately is not at all uncommon. There is some sort of financial advantage, when the corporate shell remains alive, even though their operating functions are long gone. An example is the BN merger. Operations of SP&S RY subsidiaries Oregon Trunk and Oregon Electric were absorbed immediately on merger day. (March 2, 1970.) But the corporate sides were both maintained as BN subsidiaries until November 1, 1978.
