Help!!!What shade of blue paint did the N&W use in the 60's????? I've got some cool looking N scale high hoods but I really don't want to paint them black.

The N&W blue when fresh was darker than C&O blue. To model a newly painted unit, I recommend using a full bottle of C&O Blue with enough black added to fill the remainder of the bottle. This yields a close match to the actual N&W color.

For modeling a weathered unit, just about any shade of blue can be used, as the N&W color was prone to fading badly. I have even used D&H blue to model a heavily faded unit with good results.

I never realized the N&W used a blue paint job at one time...

I'm not quite sure of the timeframe, and I don't know the reason..maybe a merger with the C&O???? But around the early 60's the N&W had the blue paint scheme going....

Yep, it's true... the C&O and B&O had planned a merger with the N&W. They even renumbered locos to accomodate their "new" roster. ALas, it did not come to be, and brought on the mourning colors: Black with the large "NW" logo.

Here is some insight to help those who may be in the dark as to all of the mergers and various take overs by the N&W(post VGN and ACY). In 1962 the N&W began the process with the ICC to merge with the NKP and WAB, and both fell under N&W control in 1964. This is the beginning of the F4 scheme. The F4 scheme is known as the Pevlar scheme, as a reference to the fmr. President of the WAB and it was his desicion to repaint all of the Bluebirds (WAB units)into the all blue scheme. When N&W became the strongest of all of the merger parties, they adopted this scheme and hence made it official on all of their units, post 1964. Many of the older N&W units were slated to be repainted and most did, and the use of Pevlar blue paint caused many of the units to fade quickly. At this time the merger talks bagan with C&O and renumbering slots were created, however this fell through and was not to be. Then in 1970 all of the units in need of paint were to be painted in the F5 scheme, in an effort to save money their units were given a simplified scheme of black and the " N & W " herald. This was one of the few times the N&W would return to using the amperstand and although not as cost saving as many thought it depleted the remaining stores of Dulux. With the intro of the F5 this was to be the last time for the half moons or hamburgers. In 1971 the N&W using all of its supplies of dulux gold and pevlar, switched to the all black scheme and solid NW herald known as the F6 scheme. This was to be standard until the merger with SOU. During this time period(1981) 2 experimental schemes arose the F7 the skunk scheme and the F8 the Claytor scheme "NORFOLK AND WESTERN". The F7 was used only on the GP38ACs and the Claytor was used primarily on SD40-2s,SD45s, C636s,C30-7s and C36-7s. Also note during the 1970s N&W became owner of EL (Hurricane Agnus) in a corporation known as DERELCO and was to be the last owner of EL until Conrail in 1976. The N&W bought units for the EL that never ran in revenue service for the N&W persey, the U33C and the SD45P, of which the U33Cs were in dead lines at Roanoake due to their fuel consumption rates and the reliabilty problems. Hope this helps with the whats where and who owned this. Y'all have a good one, Justin May

Adding that much black would seem to make it very dark, indeed, IMHO.

As far as I was aware N&W wore the Pevlar blue "Hamburger" scheme from 1966 to 1970

As stated already, this was in anticipation of a merger with the C&O/B&O, which never came about

When I decided to repaint some of my locomotives in the blue N&W scheme I could not find any true N&W blue at the hobby shops. Looking at my collection of slides of N&W units I found there were all shades of blue. I mixed my own making the colors just a little different so the units would not quite all look the same. (Having a Free Lance model Rail Road allows you to do that. LOL) I'm not a pro by any means, I just have fun with it.
