    Get some clip-on heat-sinks and place them on either side of the joint you are soldering.
    When you are finished soldering, coat the irons tip with solder and allow it to cool in place; this helps to prevent oxidizing of the tip.
    Never, ever use acid-core solder; there's a use for that stuff but model railroading isn't that place.
