Simple little bash.It requires one GP38 hood and cab unit and one SD35 walkway and mechanism. The only real work is filling in the nose brake location and adding a brake wheel and stand to the back porch. I haven't decided if this will remain a CSX unit or do a repaint for GVR. I am planning to do one more since CSX no longer has any GP38s.
Don't laugh - the Soo had a wrecked GP35 they rebuild with GP9 parts - they called it a GP22 - that was the official designation! (35+9)/2=22 Unfortunatly it was never reliable and was scrapped soon after.
Catt, Good quick and easy conversion. I guess the biggest spotting feature that will confuse folks is the dynamic brakes: GP's use one fan, SD's use 2 fans. Looks better than any SD38 I have ever attempted! Good idea. Harold
Someone else on here mentioned the SD40 Frame... But the SD35 is a smart short cut... Father Nature trees makes a CRPC style SD38 to fit on the Kato SD40.. shell looks pretty good.. I'll have to post a pic.. I might even have to look into the conversion you did... it'd be a good cheat for making another one rather cheeply.. Well guess I'll add that to my Atlas parts order.. Needs some GP9 bodies to do a CP rail GP9u.. and a high nose GP20 with the remaining parts.. ... anyone want a WP GP20??? shell..... E-mail me if interested..
Catt, Thats a great bash job, and EXTREMELY simple. In fact, I just received my undec GP 38 shell from Atlas. Chances are the SD-38 w/o dynamic brakes will be the first locomotive painted in the new scheme for the Augsburg & Concord RR Jeff Augsburg & Concord R.R. After some serious considerin' I have decided that the GVRs SD38s are actually upgraded SD35s(rebuilt to SD38 specs)In other words GP38 hoods on SD35 walkways and mech's By the way Jeff ,I haven't ordered my nondynamic shells yet.
Well, I guess you have to call me "copy-Catt." This evening, I finished work on my own SD-38. Like Catt, all I did was transplant the undec, GP-38 w/o dynamic brakes to the walkway of my SD-35. Now, this was the first locomotive to be painted in the "New" ACRR scheme. (photos pending). All the needs to be added are numberboards. Looks great, runs as good as my SD-35 did.... hmmm.... maybe that's because under that SD-38 hood lies the heart of a 35..... Jeff Augsburg & Concord R.R. Great idea and implementation, Johnno! Now if Kato could offer the same parts availability and pricing as Atlas...
