Spent some more time on South Draw, and rebuilt Tunnel 17's mountain a bit. Oh, and by the way, lo-temp hot-melt glue is still hot enough to burn ya! Low-temp, my eye.... Tunnel 16 is almost ready, and landforming is about to commence at Old Tunnel 17. 2 weeks ago, I ordered a 50# bag of Sculptamold, and 2 packs of Hydrocal. Scenery may begin as soon as I rough-in South Draw! JD's ATSF line thread is so inspirational, I want to start scenery now!! Tunnel 16: Tunnel 17 was modified so the hill wasn't as steep, as well as rebuilding the knob that protruded from that mountain--the one Mike and I love to shoot from: And an overview--only a few places yet to patch up:
You have no idea...... I think If I start making 100 trees a day, 5 days a week--after about 3 months I might have enough for the layout.
Here is the other video on the Tunnel District from Train #6 [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e2Pu--X0Ibo"]YouTube - Amtrak #6 - Part 29[/ame]
Darren, the rocky outcrop at 5:40 on that last vid is Alaska GP49 and my favorite place to shoot. South Draw is breathtaking from that precipice! Since I need tons and tons of trees, I'm planning on have an impromptu bumpy chenille tree making clinic at MT State Fair, while I run the N layout. Actually, I'm just gonna build trees, and those who want to, can learn how. It'll be a great way to spend 6 hours a day for a week!
Keep watch of my "Railroad Adventures (RRAdventures) - Ski Train" topic that I've got running now, there is more videos coming from that ride too... So, have I earned my " " badge yet
For those of you not in the know, the old layout has been dismantled in preparation for my move to Europe in early 2010. Also, with the old layout going away, a smaller hollow-core door (HCD) layout is being built to replace it. I was so ambitious in my last couple layouts, that they never got close to finished, as the task was rather daunting. A smaller one should see some semblance of completion and scenery much sooner. Plus, this one is coming with me to Germany! 36x80", and on collapsible legs, here's the new Secret Places Subdivision!
So, Hemi, once you get everything settled, are you gonna join the HCD group? (hint, hint, nudge, nudge). You've done some great stuff with your large layouts so I'd like to see how you do with a HCD.
It's one of the TrainBoard groups. I think you'd fit right in! btw, did you use some folding table legs on your HCD layout? If so, how did that go? I'm torn between using folding table legs and using bookshelves for support.
Folding table legs from ACE Hardware. BTW, scenic land forming has commenced while I await track and roadbed from my dealer.... Crescent's hill has been started, and railfans now have a brand-new Gross Dam Rd to access the tracks! Pics when I get more time...
You're one of those who does the landscaping first (maybe "landforming" is a better word) before the track is laid. I need to try this method...
I only did that this time out of necessity--no track or roadbed yet! I ordered it this week, should be a week or so, if all is in stock. The civil engineering aspect of it is pretty nifty to do, without track in the way!
I've always wondered why more people don't give this method a try. They'd learn a lot about real railroad planning. Boxcab E50
