I am due to receive a loco in the mail that is described as having Kato on the bottom in Conrail paint with the road number 6665. Any guess as to what it really is? Con Cor maybe? It is not custom painted and to my knowledge Kato never had any loco numbered 6665. Thanks, Clint
I checked over the N-scale Locomotive Database and found no Conrail #6665. There are a number that have "?" - mostly from Con-cor. You can take a look for yourself at: http://home.cfl.rr.com/dawestern/nscale/nscale.html
According to the Conrail Encyclopedia, CR 6665 was a SD45-2 that Conrail inherited from the Erie Lackawanna where it was numbered 3680. EL used them for fast freight but Conrail used them for pushers on Horseshoe Curve. The engine is probably a Kato SD45 that someone had renumbered. One note on this Conrail was not impressed with the EMD HT-C truck and ordered their locomotives with the Flexicoil truck. CR 6665 and her sisters had the HT-C and were thus relegated to the pusher pool in Altoona rather than road service.
One more thing on the CR 6665 SD45-2. When EL ordered them the units were equipped with an extra large 5,000 gal fuel tank so they could make the trip between New York and Chicago without refueling. The units lasted on Conrail until 1996 when they were leased out to other roads including CN, BN and UP.
Here is the real CR 6665 in revenue service at Cresson PA, June 16, 1978 _______ http://gelwood.railfan.net/other/cr/cr6665ags.jpg _______ eNjoy
