Start this off with an Athearn FLB COE. This particular truck will be what's called a Western truck meaning it has a longer frame with aluminum rims all around. Some of the features this truck will have will be. Scratchbuilt frame, scratched suspension & axles, exhaust to be made along with dual snorkel air intakes, trimmed the nubs off the marker lights as i'll be replacing them with fibre optics. also scratching an interior tub hoping to light the dash. Also thinking of opening the doors and cabinets hinging them should get real interesting. Added an air foil as seen in the pics below, have several Plano detail parts for it wipers, 1/4 fenders, mirrors, This will be the beginning of my cow chow wagon. It'll get a lonestar 43' grain trailer and possibly a 28' pup aka feed trough. More to come.
hope this pic shows up as this is my basic idea of what I'm aiming for. and sorry about the blurriness but going into the doctor tomorrow for arm issues
Did a little more work as i start to build the locker rear axle . Heck might even plumb this truck ROFLOL . Seriously though lots of scratchbuilding going on with this truck. Another possible paint scheme for this truck not sure yet. Also tried a 1mm Molotow chrome pen on the freightliner logo and tested a spot on the bumper looks good.
Just make sure it's a K100 KW Aerodyne cabover with a Brown manufacturing trailer lol. Thanks for checking in lots & lots of scratchbuilding going to happen as not much of the original truck will be used in this build.
Here's a little more insane progress on this truck and tested a couple of trailers 1 stock 1 modified. Modified trailer received a TK reefer unit, a working slide axle assembly still more to do to it. Tested the western look on an athearn stock KW frame kinda got the look I was after . Then to close the night got a wild hair and i'll let the pic speak for itself enjoy.
Just a little update . Found my frame material and tossed a quickie frame together, plugged the stock headlights so i could get the proper contour on the cab corner. Started making the rear most axle on the truck the black gear housing bump is a small black rhinestone that I glued to a paint jar then sanded to a more round look instead of faceted . Enjoy
Another minor update. Working on the motor need to hobbit a little more girth but it'll be a generic V8 not sure what color yetvmiggt get Olde yeller or Alpine Green. Cut the grill apart so i can make the cab tilt. Motor by itself, sitting in frame, then with cab on for testing. And finally the beginning of the mufflers and air cleaners
Throw these pics into the mix. A van i changed out the rims on for 1970's big and little's honeycomb for that custom look the original vans modular rims will be going under a mustang short track race car. Lots to do on the van also
Have a cast resin Detroit 8-V71 and fuller roadranger transmission coming for this. A lot easier to detail & paint plus I won't have to guess on the measurements . Photo updates coming soon
So gonna put all my vehicle builds here instead of posts everywhere so the boss 302 Mustang that has the race car rims above has been earmarked for being built into a normal boss 302 Mustang. So shot a little paint on it tonight decided I would go with a similar color to Ford Hugger Orange/Yellow. I used tru color DRGW aspen gold as it's the closest paint i had to the color i was after. So this will get 70's period cragar rims. Next will be the interior tub & painting the inside of the body to match the interior color. Plus other goodies for this car so here's where it's at now.
This is a great build thread Vince. I had no idea so many detail parts were available for trucks as well as other vehicles. Looking on with great interest! Please carry on.
Slowly but surely getting there. Replacing the rims that came with the car(s) as they are made to look like modern day modular rim way to new for 1970's modeling. Freightliner is on hold awaiting some part's to be ordered plus having a B.O.A.T trying to get the door hinge to work. The fire tender/tanker is being stripped for repainting. So hopefully soon on that one as well. Thanks for checking in. Also have several 57' chevs and a couple 63' vette's to build including one with 6 tail lights hehehehehe.
GJ yes there's actually a lot out there just have to hunt it down. The cragars were fitted to pickup tires i ended up get some car tires also turned out that the car tires fit the cragars nicely. Need to get those retro painted also. Going to be ordering a Detroit 8V71 V8 and transmission for the Freightliner. Dug another mustang out for the race car to be built eventually will be using the vans modulars as they are closer to racing rims of the period.
So these came in today at my not so local shop. These are going to be the headlight driving light buckets on mini boss.
Getting the cragars ready for paint in doing so found a little bit bigger tire for the rears. For that 70's big and little look let me know what you think. Getting ready to do up the interior & Monday i'll get my headlight buckets mounted.
