I made this car to see how hard it would be. It took about 4 hours of modeling time. Cost: Styrene tube $1.70 Electrical Tape $0.49 Silver Thread $0.99 Floquil NYC Jade Green $2.10 Floquil TTX Yellow $2.10 AC Models 89' Flush Deck $13.90 HO Scale Balsa 2x4 $2.50 Microtrains trucks & couplers $4.50 Microscale Decals $2.75 Fleecing somebody on ebay $Priceless My total cost to make this car was 31.03. With the materials I purchased, I will have enough left over to make about 20 of these cars, minus the cost of the flatcar, trucks, & styrene tube. Let's see, $100 a car -$31 materials= $69 profit. 4 hours labour= 17.25 per hour. Not bad for just a hobby! Brian [ 31 May 2002, 00:07: Message edited by: brian ]
Awesome job! I may do the same on some 60-foot flats I've got upstairs, with smaller-diameter tubing.
Sweet...I like the price! You bands look straighter. Might want to try some neon green bands too...for some reason, they look right. And if you mount them on MT cars, they might sell better because the collectors have't heard of AC...but then again, with people interested more in this load it might be a wonderful way for AC to get a larger market...hehehehe 600 for something that barely fits in my hands and wouldn't do at all as an anniversry gift! HA!
Very nice!! I am sure that you could have even scrounged and made them for even less. I should search around the house and see what I can come up with. Russ
WOW!!!!!!!!!! That is nice!!!! Very well done! Got to do one of those! I guess I missed the 600.00 thing. Was somebody trying for that on eBay? Russ
Rick and Russ here is what the fuss was all about: http://www.trainboard.com/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=9;t=001914
Ah....thanks! I missed that earlier thread. So, someone actually paid the 600.00!!! How many 90MACS would that buy? I wonder if the entire auction might have been a farce between 4 or 5 friends, in an effort to possibly sucker someone in. The 4 friends would not actually have to exchange any money. Russ
Beautiful job, Brian Now I will have to do some loads of pipes for my cars (been going to do some for ages, but never got around to it) Is the green copied from something you saw? Most pipes I have seen seem to be black, some green ones make a nice change and add variety.
I find it hard to believe that some idiot actually paid $600.00 for those cars. Brian that is one sweet model you have there and it will actually stay on the track too.
I pass the old Bethlem steel pipe mill in Highspire PA everyday. These pipes sit outside for a while before shipment and it appears that the green is a coating probably a rust/oxidiation preventer. The pipes are chalkly to the touch and they come out of the plant like that.
