My Loco Runs Slower on Speed Step 2 than on 1?

    Hi all.

I have a brass 2-8-0 I have been working on for some time. I installed a can motor (An NWSL 2032) and a DCC decoder, an ESU 54612, to replace the decoder I fried a few days ago. I am using an NCE Power Cab DCC system, and have programmed the decoder to the locomotive number, 2804.

Now, the problem. It ran wonderfully with the old decoder. With the new decoder, it sort of jackrabbit starts (it starts almost with a lurch of speed) and then runs slower on speed steps 2, 3, 4 and so on, up to maybe 6 or 7, slower than at speed step 1. I am very inexperienced with DCC, but I have to think this is something with speed steps, starting voltage, etc?

Any help would be amazing. Thanks all.

Perform the ESU auto tune procedure. With a good 6 feet of clear track, and all other functions off, set CV54=0. Immediately exit programming mode, and press F1. The loco should shoot forward and come to a stop. It should then run fine.

Auto tune did it! Thank you thank you! It now absolutely crawls at speed 1, and has a wonderfully slow speed increase to a max of maybe 45-50 SMH at 28, which is probably pretty accurate for a Connie. Thank you!!
