well, made my first go-round at kitbashing some Pennsy-style steam. This is an H10s, made from a Minitrix Pacific and a Spectrum Consolidation. It still needs decals and some other details, like a lens in the tender light and MT couplers, but this is where I'm at so far. I installed a Lenz LE0511W and it runs quite well. The high-side Lines West tender wasn't as hard as I figured it would be. I sort of followed the lead from Jim Kelly's article "Building an N scale Pennsy 2-10-2" in the October 1979 Model Railroader, plus I have a lot of photos and a Lee Town HO scale Lines West tender that I sort of copied from a bit. As far as the engine itself, it was a lot of guesswork and a little bit of "cut-and-pray," but for the most part it was pretty easy, as I followed the directions in "Kitbashing a PRR H10 Consolidation" in the December 1975 issue of MR (thanks Thirdrail!) This is the first steam kitbash I've tried, and I'm happy with the results so far. One down, five or six to go. Ray and here's my prototype:
I gotta say that I am always impressed when someone starts cutting on steamers as I am too much of a whimp to risk damaging mine in the process. Congrats on a unique engine.
Thanks for the kind words everyone! I am actually anxious to start the next one. I think they'll get better each time. :shade: In the meantime, I had a couple folks email me about how to do this, so I wrote up the project with some pics: http://www.westernallegheny.com/modelrr/kitbashh10s/index.html any feedback on the page would be greatly appreciated. I have really let my website wither on the vine for the last year or so, and I'm trying to get it up to date with pages like this one. Ray
Ray, your website shows that you Got GUTS! I mean, your FIRST attempt at a kitbash, saws 'n'everything, and the results are fantastic...!
Excellent work! (I miss some of the old smileys....the lil guy bowing down would be appropriate here!)
