As I posted previously I'm building my first layout.

    It's 2x4 - my rough plans:
-A small river across the width of the layout
-A mountain on one end overlooking the town
    -One industry
-Simple track plan, Oval with a turnout for the paint factory
-DCC - Power Cab, Digitrax or Raspberry pi

This is the first building I've weathered. What I did learn was the upside of buying built up structures isn't worth the hassles when it comes to painting. It's much harder to weather a built structure or paint the details.

In this case the only way I could give this red window sills is by heating up the structure with a hairdryer and popping out the windows. But it's a good lesson.

    Here's the structure:

It was silly that I was intimidated by building these structures but I'm gonna give it another go and build this one from the kit.

The roof and the fence are close to great, assuming you are aiming for a factory with a relatively consistent maintenance schedule. The tanks and pipes could a little grime streaking, and you could even do some subtle red streaks down form the windows. For them I'd to an off-white wash ( maybe 30% paint 70% isopropyl alcohol) to tone them down.

Hey Phil - Never thought of that stuff, great points and I will def consider.

I learned quickly the downside to built up structures - it's hard to get some areas customized because they are already in place.

I might take another stab at this and buy the kit version and see how it goes so I can customize every piece.

I really would like to paint he window panes red but there's some areas that are just blocked or too tight to get a brush in. I did consider heating them up and popping them out.

I ended up painting the bay doors - I didn't think of that earlier. I painted the bay doors a sky gray and added some black weathering wash.

I was tempted to paint them red or a caution yellow but figured a more industrial muted type color might be better.

One other thing I'm noticing is, your mind keeps looking for ways to add more details hahaha.
