I finally finished my first WC SD40-2. I ended up using a Kato GP38 fuel tank and cutting the frame to the correct fuel tank length. I also added a few details and a Digitrax decoder. I think on my next one, I'll paint the stripes instead of using decals. Even the SF warbonnets weren't this difficult!
Excellent work! I know what you mean about the decals. I used a white decal to do my GP20 in big sky blue.. and I think masking it would have been easier Tim
That looks fantastic Chuck. Nice job with the shortened tank. It sure makes a difference. Not knowing much about WC's roster is that an ex SOO unit?? grant
Thanks guys! I am finally narrowing down my search for a road to model. I have always liked the Frisco, having grown up around it and the Santa Fe. But, I want something a little more modern and the BNSF doesn't do much for me. Besides, I really like the class 2 stuff. Grant - From the info that I have read, the SD40-2's are ex-Algoma Central units. The WC did have some ex-SOO GP30 and 35's.
Thanks Chuck, I knew that WC inherited -2's from Algoma Central but didn't know they had short tanks. I guess that would explain the cab mounted bell. A dead Canadian giveaway. Again nice job grant
The cut down fuel tank really makes this unit stand out! Did you need to alter the frame, when shortening the tank? Is this unit an ex-Milwaukee Road SD40-2? Boxcab E50
Chuck, Beauty!!, Looks great, can't tell the stripe is a decal. I agree painting would be the method of choice on the next one, simply for ease. Remember light colors go on first!! 2slim
Here is a photo of one that I will do next. It is an SD40, ex-MoPac, with SD7/9 trucks (notice the 3 brake cylinders per sideframe!). This photo came from the Fallen Flag site.
Paul- Yes, the yellow is a decal. I think it might be easier to just paint it if I can find the yellow to match! The maroon letters and numbers are seperate that apply over the yellow stripe. Boxcab - Yes, I had to cut the frame. I marked the frame to fit the GP38 fuel tank, disassembled it, cut it using a hacksaw and files. I attached the tank using a little silicone and made a panel to cover the hole on the front of the tank with styrene.
Very nice work, Chuck. That does look distinctive with the shortened tank. Ken, Chuck used a similar approach to what I did with my Soo SD40-2's - Soo SD40-2's. [ October 08, 2005, 01:51 AM: Message edited by: Gats ]
Awesome work Chuck. If you're looking for a new RR...how about the Arizona & California? http://www.trainweb.org/tomfassett/azrail/acrr.html
