Next up is a project I have been working on for some time, cutting down a Waltrhers 48' Thrall well car set to a 40' set, now very very close to being done:

I know I'm coming in late to this thread, but WOW!!! You are my hero. My kids are 2 and 5 so it will be a long time until I have the time and space to try to emulate you. :)

Thanks! And yes, due to the kids most of my work is done late-nite- after they are off to bed! And I have no space-- so I have no layout right now, its crated up in modules in the closet, giving me more time for weathering work!

Here are a pair of gondolas I finished recently that will be entering service on my D&H Division in scrap and construction debris service and occasional plate steel service:

Thanks guys! I've got 3 locos to do (2 SD40-2's and a GP38-2) and then rolling stock is back-burner for a while while I get the quick-set-up-quick-take-down modular layout ready for the summer train season (Florida rainy season is stay inside time!)

Gary, what did you use for the handgrab/ladders on the articulated ends of your Thrall wellcar sets? The GMM models etch kit for these does not come with any...

Hi Jan - I had to look through my detail parts to remind myself what I used. :)

In the photo below, the stirrups were from a GMM passenger car detail kit: 160-26 (I think it was style #3, but it's obvious which size is best), and the upright hand grabs were cannibalized from a standalone Thrall well car detail set (it was one where the walkway holes hadn't quite etched through, so it became a spare).

May I ask what trees you used in the top picture?

The Pine trees are by "Grand Central Gems" and the foreground brush trees are scenic express super trees. The Grand central gems are very affordable trees, those are medium sized. and they look pretty darned good too.

Thanks for the answer, and they do look darned good!
Just placed an order at a online hobby shop, now I have to wait a month or so lol.

What other trees did you use/ could you recommend?

The tree's on that module are the grand central pines, scenic express hardwood trees, and a trio of JTT Hemlock tree's that are visible in several of the pictures with the skinny darker brown trunks. The scenic express trees are fantastic very realistic trees and are an excellent dedal for a starter kit. The JTT trees are awesome but are quite pricey. I have a couple of other trees on there that for the life of me I cannot recall the manufacturer, but they use a real hunk of wood for the trunk and are well priced. I'll try and get the name for you.

Thanks again for all your help!
I have been to a few model train shows here but could just not find what I was looking for (or I over looked them LOL).

The last 2 weeks I have been working with salt to create some other weathering effects. This is a method from Tom Mann's weathering book and is also described earlier in this thread. Here is a cement hopper "peeler"

This is meant for 2 effects: to simulate old cement that has stuck to the hopper and areas where the paint has peeled off. Here is an actual 3 bay cement hopper from Tarmac cement photographed a few years back with cement dried on the outside:

Here is some more salt work on a CP Rail bulkhead flat by Microtrains. The bulkheads are steel and rust, while the deck is wood. So I painted the rust, covered it in areas of salt and repainted CP red (Soo line red):

unfortunately the pictures do not capture the texture of the rust due to there being a peeled paint effect, its very cool!

Next, some folks wanted pix of BLMA trucks in action, here are some:
