My current layout, a 10' x 10' x 2' wide "L" in "N" scale is on hold, because I will be moving in about 45 days. I also like the other end of the Spectrum, "O" While I'm stuck to armchair modeling I've been thinking of building an "O" eith under or over the "N" layout. I received a K-line little Reading diesel switcher with coal cars for Christmas. I thought I could model a little coal mine branch for the "O". Any one done anything similar, any good ideas ? Thanks Dave
If you've got the room, go for it! I would recommend the N scale above, about shoulder height for optimal viewing. The larger scale being lower isn't as affected by the "helicopter" view. But wait, here's the down side: Two different scale layouts require splitting the hobby budget. I'm not just speaking of money, but time and effort also. If one were almost complete and you wanted to keep building that's one thing, but to start both will probably leave you with two incomplete layouts for quite some time. I'm afraid it would be like trying to maintain a wife and a girlfriend. Sure it can be done, but it will deplete energy resorces quickly. Just my 2 cents, food for thought.
Ok, heres the scoop. My dad has three different scale layouts in the same area. On the top he has American flyer, in the middle he has HO, on the bottom is O scale. The size of his room is 10x8. I however have just a 4x6 L-shape N-Scale. Space is a major issue for myself.
hey Mr Wrinkles.....where you at in Cali? I tend to agree with John (Balou-line). Splitting the budget could stop you ever completing either layout. You need the occasional 'win' to keep you motivated, so plugging away on 2 layouts and never seeming to get closer to the end might just kill the desire.
I think trains are trains. Currently I have HO, N, and O scale tinplate. I gave my G scale to a freinds son. I just do what feels good at any particular moment, model railroad hedonism if you will. I think you should do the O scale. It'll be fun.
