Running nicely at 6.06 volts...prior to maintenance it would not be moving.

    Graham,
Welcome to the board. The thing to remember with the F7s is that the designs of current production is ancient and you get "state of the art" from 20-30 years ago. I bought a Marklin F7 set in the mid 1980's. It has run well provided you don't want to pull too many cars or run too slow, and don't mind the sewing machine sound.
I bought my first MTL F7 in the late 1990s, It's also been a decent runner, pulls a bit better than the Marklin. The original design does have a tendency to lean into curves. And like the Marklin still pretty noisy.
I've been very pleased with my AZL units (GPs, RDCs, Mikado) but they don't have an F unit yet. Although I've personally had only one fairly minor quality issue which was quickly rectified, the build quality varies quite a bit judging from the posts.

"Micro Gloss" from Microscale works like a champ for this-I've used it on all my F's, cabooses, and cars. Houses and buildings too!! Takes only minutes to use, 20-30 minutes to dry.....
