As I understand it, these seem to be a good standard inexpensive transformer for a basic train set. I will be running one large oval (4x8') and one inner oval (I have cheap kit transformer for inner track, if I even go that direction). I understand a bit of what DCC is capable of, but I just don't think I'm there yet...

Track is currently brass with some steel track, I hope to eventually get nickel-silver.

Anyway, my son is 2 and has a MAJOR interest in trains. Talks about them before going to bed at night and wakes in the morning. He has his wooden set to play around with.

I was thinking of trying to rig up a train or building with sound, but than I came across this transformer. Does anyone have an opinion?

Are these reliable? Should I avoid picking up a used one, should I come across one?

    Thank you for any information!

GF, I always have an opinion:eek:hboy:

Personally I think that would be GREAT to entertain your 2 yr old. MRC power packs are quite reliable, a very good brand. Your locos will run better with it.
As far as a used one, I wouldn't hesitate to buy a used one if I knew it was in good working condition, I've had my MRC for 6 years now and it's still going strong. But use good common sense as in buying anything used. Does the seller have a good rep? Does it look to be in good shape? and so on....

Thank you for the reply and information. I think I lost my angle on the used one, but the new one is not much more.

    Thanks again!
