Seems like everytime I'm in Omaha, NE, there is something interesting going on down by the Amtrak station. I was there yesterday morning and noticed that they (meaning UP) are moving Big Boy #4023. I'm not sure where it's going to, as I didn't have much time to investigate. This was the location of a DDA40X Centennial #6900 as well, but it was moved prior to my last December trip to Omaha.

Big engine. Big moving job. I remember seeing both the Big Boy and the Centennial from the highway a few years ago (about 10). As I remember, there is a UP museum right downtown. I was there on Christmas Eve, so everything was shut down.

Oh how I wish it were going to a rebuild! It would be spectacular to see one of these under steam again!

Ironic that it's being moved by truck, the very critter that has hurt the rail industry. But WOW, what a pict! Thanks for sharing

I visited the one in Steamtown. This might make me venture to Nebraska.

Superb pictures Eric! Quite a moving job! Pity it will be a static exhibit, but at least it is saved, and the display site looks impressive [IMG]

Wheres the picture of the trailer blocking the crossing? Yep, as the load was crossing the bnsf one of the trailers axles collapsed blocking the line. (How do you fix an axle with that weight on a trailer!!!)

Mythman, thanks for posting those. Amazing that a BigBoy can be supported on trucking equipment. Then again, that axle............ ;)

I heard the Big Boy got stuck crossing the tracks! Either one of the transport axles or the cribbing to cross the tracks collapsed (or both).

It's interesting how they lift and move these things. I was a little bit involved when the containment vessel for a nuclear power plant was moved from Massachusetts to Georgia for disposal. I remember it moved by road some 20 miles (?) down to the railroad tracks, and then was carted by special railcars down to Georgia.

Hahah, it blocked a BNSF crossing. That would be one strange dispatch convo

"Uh train 239 westbound, theres uh, a big boy stranded at the crossing"
