    The Crystal River Pictoral.
A very interesting book. Goes along with the Rio Grande Pictoral.

To my recollection, many of the Washington DC monuments were constructed using Colorado marble. The original block used for the Tomb of the Unknow soldier came from Marble!! The origianl block was recently replaced, because of cracking and age etc....and the replacement once again came from Marble.

Also dealing with Marble, is the 2 volume set of books:

    Marble
    A town built on dreams
    Vol 1
    Oscar McCollum Jr.
    Copywrite 1992, Sundance Publications
    Denver, Colorado 80203
    ISBN 0-913582-55-7

    Marble
    A town built on dreams
    Vol 2
    Oscar McCollum Jr.
    Copywrite 1993, Sundance Publications
    Denver, Colorado, 80203
    ISBN 0-913582-56-5

I've got special copies of both. Signed and numbered!! Bought direct from the family of Jackson C Thode, during the narrow gauge convention in Denver in September 2003.
Also an UNopened copy of Never on Wednesday
A look at the California Zephyr.

Enough rambling for this morning!!! Getting ready to make trip back up to Moffat tunnel today, and see if Yankee Doodle Lake is accessable this time.

Here's what happens when too much throttle is used cresting a ruling grade--the throttle is not backed off as the train crests the grade, that is:

Jerry, have you ever seen a broken drawbar that looked like this? I have seen 2, that had the actual 'bar' pulled apart, but never like this. That hogger must have been special, to break one like this!

I have shots of knuckles, too for those interested...

The guys at MRL do not park all these knuckles at the top of the Pass for no reason...

Uhhh... it is still there :) NS still hauls a boatload of coal out of WV and KY... if you ever want a guided tour of the Pokey, give me a holler.

As an aside, high-horsepower does not equate to high-tonnage. Tractive effort is what counts in terms of hauling tonnage... more horsepower just allows you to pull that tonnage faster.

To get the most TE, N&W had SD45s that were weighted to 410,000-420,000lbs (depending on order)...

Same reason CSX had their AC4400CWs weighted to 432,000lbs...

Don't you come have have axle loading issues above 420K pounds?
I read somewhere that axle loading above 71K per axle can break rails...

Hmm, how many knuckles can engineer breaks before he gets the *hot seat* in front of RFE (Road Foreman of Engines)?

With as many knuckles as I saw that had dynamited, more than a few people would be in the hot seat! All were in a roughly 10-carlength area, too...

Thats very true.....there are some areas that require alot more attention! We have several on our railroad that are littered with knuckles.

Even at 432,000pds, its only 72K per axle... easily handled by 132pd rail... even more so by the now standard 136pd rail, and doubly so with the new 141pd rail being introduced.

    Isn't 141# rail code 80 in N scale?:lightbulb:

Thanks, Robbman! MRL's Mullan Pass has several areas receiving new 141# rails...

What's the chance of seeing the original photos in the beginning of this thread again? I came along too late.

All I'm getting for pictures throughout this thread are little blue boxes with question marks in them. What's the deal?

    Missing Photos

The photos disappeared when we moved from the old Rail Images site where the pictures were stored. I have several images that disappeared from old threads. I tried to replace my pictures in the threads, but there were too many. If you PM the person who originally posted them, maybe they can repost them here. I try to repost mine if I get a request, but sometimes the pictures are lost. This doesn't solve the issue, but maybe explains it some.

[edit] I just PMed Hemi. We shall see. He's pretty busy with his job right now.

I apologize, folks! I have so many photos posted on this site in so many threads, it is nearly impossible to keep track. I have been very busy, but all the links are finally finished.
