Has anyone used any of the cheap motion sensors to trigger signals or crossings? I see 5 HC-SR501 motion sensors selling for $9 which stirred my interest.

They probably would not work, Those are passive infrared sensors, which means they rely on detecting the infrared heat given off by a human body.

    Robert,

could they be used to turn on an animated scene on a layout when a warm body walks up?

I suppose you could put an infrared light source on the train. As another option, small metal detectors cost just a few dollars to make. I don't see why they wouldn't sense a passing train.

Absolutely. One Christmas I used one to trigger my in the tree N-scale train that was driven by an Arduino and motor shield. Anytime someone would walk in front of the tree, the train would run for several seconds and then stop.
