Talking of Kato SD40-2's, does anyone know, or expect, that Kato will do the standard nose, mid-production series, e.g. like the 'snoots' but normal nose. Surely there were more of this type than others?
Alan,at one time Kato mentioned plan to do all of the variants or phases of the 40-2. A friend of mine that used to work for GMLG says that there are actually about 22 variants that could be modeled. !!!!! ------------------ Catt!
Thanks, Catt. I don't expect Kato will do ALL the variants, then!!! How did you put that flashing-eyed smiley in your post?

Alan, would these be different from the Kato SD40-2's on the market now? ------------------ Keep on Track'N Harold Riley www.phcomputing.com
Harold, yes the ones out now are the original type of SD40-2 as first built. I have one of these in BN livery, as Santa Fe didn't have any early ones. The ones we are waiting for, due out any time, are the so-called 'snoots' because they have a long short hood, to house radio control equipment. Santa Fe had several of these, so I have two on order in different liveries. The ones I would like, are the same basically as the 'snoots', but with standard short hood. The main differences are the radiator grilles. Santa Fe had loads of these, so I hope for some to be produced. Alan www.ac-models.com
Dunno which ones Kato is doing, but I hope they are 116" as this is the one that Santa Fe had. I have on order one in BNSF H1 and 0ne in Santa Fe Blue/Yellow Warbonnet. Whatever, they will suit me fine BNSF - Best in the West! ------------------ Alan www.ac-models.com http://Andersley.homestead.com http://galleryusarail_tehcaj.homestead.com http://eurogallery.homestead.com
Actually, all of Santa Fe's are 123" snoots. There was some debate on this on an email discussion list I'm on, and even some books say they are 116", but a friend and I went out and measured some the units that were supposedly 116", and they are actually 123"; one of the advantages of having friends that work for the railroad! EMD had gone to a longer nose when they were built. The only 116" snoot SD40-2's are UP's, and SP SD40T-2's 8300-8306, 8350-8356, have 116" noses as well. All the other SP/SSW snoot tunnel motors are 123". ------------------ Have A Nice Day!
Thanks for the info Mankind. The place I read that Santa Fe units had 116" snoots was in an article with plans in 'Mainline Modeler' magazine. After I read your post, I measured the plans, and sure enough, the noses are 123"!! ------------------ Alan www.ac-models.com http://Andersley.homestead.com http://galleryusarail_tehcaj.homestead.com http://eurogallery.homestead.com
Apparently it is the 116" nose version that Kato is doing, which is only suitable for UP ------------------ Alan The perfect combination - BNSF and N Scale! www.ac-models.com http://Andersley.homestead.com http://galleryusarail_tehcaj.homestead.com http://eurogallery.homestead.com
You would thnk that with a UP nose they could at least try and get the UP one correct, but no, they go and spell PACIFIC PAC IFIC, geez Kato-your costumer base is starting to dwindle! BC Rail King
Does anyone have any idea when the snoots will be delivered, the Kato website has been saying mid april for some time ------------------ http://members.optusnet.com.au/~pcassar/index
Hello, Alot of people are expecting them in May, but who knows, maybe they will actually show up on time for once-stranger things have happend! --------------------- Have a nice day, BC Rail King [This message has been edited by BC Rail King (edited 09 April 2000).]
