    I should really make a start on some tank cars now, but I find these hardest to weather and have had poor results in the past.

    I think Jon used a tool in the US known as Distresser. I'm sure he used it with some fibre glass brushes like this here from a German company.

    Yes, that's the tool I use, although it hurts like heck if one of the strands gets caught in your fingers.
