Thanks to a very kind visitor from Australia, the Andersley Western has acquired two more Alco's. They will both eventually be repainted in AW colours, like the one in the background. Thanks Gats
Looks great, Alan! Sorry I haven't gotten back yo you on the decals, but I've been swamped here, especially not that I'm also planning a wedding (mine). I've been playing with a stencil for the AW logo in HO but haven't had much luck with it. If you want I can email you the info on the guy I had do decals for me in the past.
That will be nice! I completely agree on the repaint of the CV unit...but you sure you don't want to add the Cotton Belt unit to your SP Fleet? Either way, more power is always good! [ 08 May 2002, 09:03: Message edited by: Benny ]
Benny, I agree that it looks good in Cotton Belt, but what would be the latest date these ran in that scheme. My layout is loosely dated in the early to mid '90's. Anyway, repainting is not imminent, as lots of stuff is in line waiting for the paint shop

Thanks Don They were all gone by 1968/9, so too early for my layout to use them in Cotton Belt colours. Oh shucks! They were all scapped Actually, unbeknown to the scrapping company, one was rescued and delivered to the AWRR, via Australia
Here's an idea: Here in the States, several historical groups have repainted old diesels into original paint schemes- for instance, the Rock Island E unit running on that shortline in Kansas, the New Haven U25B in Connecticut, several New Haven FL9s, and the PAs that Doyle McCormack (the guy who runs SP4449) is wanting to repair & repaint into Nickel Plate colors (not their original liveries, but he's an NKP guy, and NKP did have PAs). Therefore, it would stand to reason that the AW would host some historical society who just happened to restore a long-lost Cotton Belt RS3, and use it for excursion work or even loan it to the AW for some light switching duties- that RS1 in the background could use a little help You could possibly even use the same story for the CV RS11 if you wanted, or just go ahead & repaint into AW colors. Just a thought.......
Thanks for the suggestion Bob, that way I could have almost anything on the layout The AW already has an RS1, RS2, RSC2, and RS11, so the two new arrivals will swell the ranks. We need some bigger Alcos, like C424 or C425, and C628 or C630 would be great! A C636 would be the icing on the cake
I considered running an all-Alco roster as well, but the price of Alcos (Atlas, KAto) and the price of old Geeps (LifeLike, Atlas) prompted me to go to a mostly all-EMD roster. I did sneak in an RSD4 I got off eBay- it's still unpainted, and runs really well.
Alan, when you paint over a factory painted shell that is not undec, do you have to strip it, or do you paint right over it? If you strip it, what do you use?
Alan, I still see that Cotton Belt paint scheme come through occassionally. Of course it's on an EMD -40 of some variety, not an RS-3. And it is becoming more rare each day. Apparently SP, and now UP never got around to re-painting and in one or two cases even re-numbering the Cotton Belt units. Therefore that scheme is certainly viable for 2002. I usually just paint over the original finish after thoroughly washing to remove any grease, etc. On any models where the lettering, striping etc. stands proud enough to feel, I strip with Scalecoat stripper, which works well. Sometimes the first thing to come off during stripping is the lettering, which is usually enough for me. A good test is to lightly spray with primer, or flat grey paint, and if the lettering still shows clearly, then strip the shell.
The paint scheme is still around Hank, but not on those RS3's, unfortunately. As it could be some time before they are repainted, I may do a "patch" job, adding the AW lettering until the repaint
