Ok, I want to do a MoPac SD50. I want it in a what if (UP had not taken control) scheme. So without blasting me for re-writing history, buzzsaw or not? On the cab or the long hood? Possible logical number series that will not interfere with other numbers? I'm no MP modeler but I like the look of the blue and want a run-thru unit.
I'd go with the Screaming Eagle Buzzsaw (later emblem) on the cab, and number it in the 50XX series. The emblem and placement would be in line with later MP power, and the number matches the numbers given the units lettered MoPac in the immediate post merger era, so has a form of logic to it.
MP's latter-day paint schemes were never flashy, but they did look good when new (apparently Mr. Jenks didn't think paint hauled tonnage, either). I agree with Eagle- perhaps using a pic of an SD40-2 as a model on how to place decals, and definitely numbering it in the 5000 series (was the 3500 series already taken by the GP50s?). We'd love to see pics when finished! Yeah, yeah, I know, I'm a Frisco guy, but Frisco and MP ran thru much of the same territory, and I miss seeing 'em both.
I had read elsewhere that the buzzsaw was indicative of turbocharged units. No mention of this is above. Was that info wrong?
The buzzsaw was standard on all units. Until repaints in the late 70's the screaming eagle on the long hood indicated turbocharged units.
I am fairly new to this website and will post pictures soon, but there is a picture of my dash-9 in mopac blue on the kato website customer gallery ,I think a little "what if" can be a lot of fun. http://katousa.com/gallery/album50
Jay, Nice job. Also look at this: MoPac SD90. From Tom Stolte's Oddballs Decals website. Imagination is fun!
Wonder what an SD50 would look like in T&P's Swamp Holly Orange & black, complete with the T&P diamond logo............
There'd be several folks along the ex-T&P from Texarkana to Marshall, Longview and west to Dallas & Ft. Worth that would agree.
