Montana avalanche halts Amtrak trains

    Amtrak trains were stopped mid-route after an avalanche closed BNSF’s mainline through the Montana Rockies.



    The railroad in a service announcement at 4 p.m. CT Sunday said an avalanche closed its Northern Corridor at Marias Pass near Summit, Mont.

    An estimated time for reopening the route has not been determined.

    Amtrak’s train No. 8, the eastbound Empire Builder traveling from Seattle to Chicago, was stopped at Essex, Mont., according to Amtrak’s Transitdocs website. There were unconfirmed reports that No.7, the westbound Empire Builder was also stopped, at Browning, Mont. Transitdocs was still showing the train outside Chicago as of Monday.

    There was no update by BNSF as of late Monday afternoon.
