Smoke consumers: All the P&LE Berks had them. The only other NYC engine I have seen with them is one in Al Staufer's "Steam Power...." book, Pacific 9253, hmm, built in 1926..... that's interesting. Hank, I think they were quite unknown unless one lived along the P&LE. They had such short lives. Russell, have you seen the Classic Trains "Steam Glory 2?" It has a great article on Berks of all roads.
Oh, yeah. I seem to have collected everything I can find on Berks. Back in the early 60s I came across the Nickel Plate 759 at Steam Town in Bellow Falls, Vermont. It was like a morgue there and I found all those dead steamers very depressing. Then when I found out they were restoring that engine to run again, for some reason I took an interest in all of that wheel arrangement.
LEW, excellent idea. I went looking for it and man, how time flies when we're having fun. It was almost three years ago. It has the same photo of 9400 above, but it's great information. Go here: http://www.trainboard.com/grapevine/showthread.php?t=75544
