I live in an apartment in S. Calif. and am quite over the collecting, armchairing, running on Unitrax ovals stage [IMG] . Has anyone successfully built an Iain Rice style modular railraod? If so, can you give us some feedback?

    Thanks!

I don't quite follow what you mean by Ian Rice style modular, but I am planning to build some oNeTrak modules to take up a bedroom soon.

Are you refering to the British style of moduler, where you would model a specific scene with the trains comming into and then leaving through a tunnel or under a bridgeto a fiddle yard perhaps? [IMG] [IMG]

    Hi,

Sorry for the confusion. Actually, I was referring more to modular railroading outside the standards of Ntrack or oNetrack. I'm trying to learn effective ways of building without the confines of any standard.

    Thanks ya'll!

    SPman,
You can do what I did. I built my layout modular, on 1x4 frames of 18x48", with 1/2" OSB on top, glued, countersunk, and screwed. I used 1x3 legs, 42" long, and 1x2" braces diagonally,a nd around all corners. This is very sturdy, and will not shake too much, save for a hard shove. I glued a 2" chunk of foam of the 18"x48" dimensions on top, and and lay the track diretly on top, using WS foambed, and latex liquid nails to glue everything down. Foam, foambed, AND track. It works really quite well. I stack the foam and cut it w/ a hotwire cutter for scenery forms. I made my own track plan, and assemble the modules *all 12* in an L shaped pattern. I temp clamped the modules together, levelled them, and drille for bolts and washers with nuts. I then tightened the bolts and nuts to create a very sturdy hold. Check out my webshots pics, and see what's coming along, and how the layout looks. I have more pics to post, and can send some ont he underside details. Like the bolt details, the braces and legs' detail.

Hi Espeeman, I ran into the same situation as you when I moved to a California apartment several years ago.
    My solution was:

You guys are awesome! Thanks for the help. HemiAdda2d, cool layout! I like the concept and the track plan! Great job! And yeah, picts of the underside details would be very helpful.
Pray59 and BoxcarE50, I haven't had a chance to check out the links you've suggested but I certainly will. Thanks for the input.
Where the modules connect to one another, are you guys using sectional track that comes up when you disconnect the modules or are you using precision cuts and butting the tracks together?

    Espeeman,
I am trying to use sectional trrack for this, but the mainline is as joint-free as possible to make for more reliable running. Why do you think that most Class 1's use welded rail for their mains??? [IMG]

    Hi Pray59,

I finally got a chance to check out your website. Very cool idea [IMG] . I take it that you can mix and match modules to give a variety of operating posibilities and changes in scenery. Thanks for sharing!

I have moved 3 times and each time I arranged the modules different. I'm converting to code55, and larger radius, but I wish I started the modules code55 because the turnouts are expensive to throw out.

I'd love to see what you finally come up with as your standard... Please post a trackplan when you come up with one.
