Does anyone know of a definitive resource for when the Milw GP40's received their "Billboard" lettering? ("Milwaukee Road" on the long hood and nose.) I know it was 1974 or later. But was there a method to their bringing them in to the Shops for this application? Individually? In groups?

I believe these were the first new locos to come delivered from EMD with the billboard lettering already applied. I'll have to go back and check my records to be sure though.

    Hi Mike-

The last GP40's acquired, were 2068-2071 in 1969. Billboarding didn't start until late 1973. With an order of SD40-2. The first GP38-2 order, 350-355 in Spring of 1973, was the last delivery to come without billboards.

I have a fair collection of books, slides and photos. But :( not extensive enough to determine when the GP40's first began getting billboards added.
