I think the numbering I have is correct. I'll have to check tonight. The question is I am modeling several of these and all of the photos of them I see have vertical brake staff/wheel assemblies. Was this the case throughout their servce life on the Milwaukee Road?

    Thanks in advance

I believe the numbers are incorrect. Those look like box car series.

Have info showing three orders for what I believe are the cars. All are 70 tin "FM" class 63' 3" over the couplers. But it dates no later than early 1967.

    60000-60049 (Pullman-Standard, 1958)
    60050-60099 (Thrall Car, 1959)
    60100-60199 (US Railway Equipment, 1960)

Drawings show tall three series with a fixed vertical staff.

The next series of cars, are a lesser capacity. Same length, but 50 tons. Rebuilds from old piggyback flats, via Milw Shops. Showing retractable staffs.

    Maybe this helps some?

64000-64399FM and 65500-66468FM were the series I was inquiring about. My sources indicate the 64000 series was built by The Road in '43 and the other series between '38 and '45. I just was wondering if they retained the verticle staff brake until they were retired.

    Thanks for the help,

Given those corrected numbers, my info on both car series show that by 1967, they had all been re-equipped with the retractable (flush) Superior brake wheel. However, no hint of exactly when.

If you have access to anyone at the Milwaukee Road collection, Milwaukee Public Library, and they happen to know where files E-7569 reside, that will get you the fine specs on the built 1945 64000-64399 series.

My info just shows built 1938 for the 65500-66468 series.

    Dear Boxcab,

Thank you, and yes it does. I model from 1940-whatever point I want to say the U30C and FP 45 fit into. The layouts not yet big enough to justify any SPRINT runs, and I don't have a urge to model the demise. I picked up a bunch of Tyco flat cars at a show and am working them over to respecability. Looks like I have so staff work to do.

    Thanks again,
    Mark

The Midwest's secret weapon this winter...my dual puspose wood/coal furnace. Picking up a few bags of Appalachin anthracite next week.
