Hey fellow B&O fans of the liking, It was asked in the C&O forum, why not ask it in the B&O Forum?. Anyway, What was your favorite steam and diesel locomotive for the B&O, and why? I'll begin, I love the good ole EM-1 as the screen name implies, For one, it was articulated, and the biggest on the B&O mainlines. Cab number 7600 is the most favorited loco for me from my life long fondness of the B&O... And its my all tyme favorite loco of any of the loco's known.... I also like the B&O's S-1's, 2-10-2... HUGE rigid frame loco. And powerfull just a brute in its own class, "Big Six"..... Favorite loco of the breed, is S-1 cab number 6173.... For steam passenger..... As most should say the "President Class" P-7's. The President Washington cab number 5300! First of the breed, and the green paint. A beautifull locomotive! Its sad that the train it pulled wasn't the same color! But still the loco itself was a killer for good looks! And for diesels, I have to go with the original paint job on the SD-7, # 774, with the 2 yellow pin stripes, the one on the side sill and the one on the hood & nose, and cab.... Another brutfull looking loco! Anyone else have a favorite? Or a few favorites I should say! As I mentiond a few. So post your favorites guys! [ 22 January 2002: Message edited by: 7600EM_1 ]
That's a tough question .... I don't know that the B&O had that many unique locos (I'm talking diesels... I don't know anything about steam ) Gee, they didn't have the unique EMD offerings that C&O had. How about the GP9 Torpedo tubes? I like the blue and grey from the passenger diesels, E units, F units, and GP9's. Harold
Harold, Not bad! They were really decent loco's as well. I like the ole SD-7/9's for their size and weight with the double yellow striping, with the dark blue, and "Baltimore And Ohio" written out... I always liked that paint job for some reason, but the solid dip and just "B&O" is easier to paint and model! But I've done alot of the double striped units... Takes time but I like them so. And not to many companies offer the paint scheme.. So My resort is to custom paint them myself....
I have always liked the EL 2-8-8-0's for some reason. They weren't that big, but they were real workhorses. The Mikados had nice lines and the President class Pacific's were really handsome pieces of machinery. As for diesels, I like the early blue, black, grey and gold of the E units. Actually I liked that color scheme on any diesel.
Marylandrailfan, Nice choice for a steamer! The "EL' certainly were workhorses! They had a stronger tractive effort them the EM-1's! They stood at 118,000 pounds of tractive effort where the EM-1's stood at 115,000 pounds of tractive effort! I believe that figure was made at 35 to 40 MPH.... On those ole bad boys, I have 5, EL's in HO scale made by Rivarossi, some where actual EL's and others were customized from a Y6b! And 4 EM-1's in HO scale made from UP Big Boys made my Rivarossi..... And another one of the N&W Y6b's became an LL-1, 0-8-8-0. So I have/had 6 of them....
I like the big sixes for freight and the Presidents for passenger. In diesel my favourite is the GP9TT loco in that standout livery. I have 3 in n scale and always causes great interest when I run them at the club, lots of oo's and ah's. As a fan from Oz I cannot add a lot to this list and havn't reached the USA for a visit yet, 2003? Sure wish it was more active. Malcolm
Sand Patch, Yeah nice choice as well! The "Big Sixes" were the frieghter of loco's for the B&O.... Only, I like the big sixes YES, but only in 2's! As in double headed... on the point or pushing either way! Just as long as its 2 of 'em!
