I bought a Microtrains Northern Pacific FT table top train set at a show in Oregon last weekend. There was a black MOW caboose in the set. Don of D&S trains who sold it to me said the caboose is extremely rare and only available with the train set I bought. Can anyone shed any light on this car. I don't know too much about the collecting aspect of this hobby. I usually run what I buy, but If it is truly rare, I'll leave it in the box where it is.

    Bill-

Years ago, I collected Kadee/MT. They would indeed put items in sets, and multi-packs, that were unavailable elsewhere. This made them low in number. And very desireable. You might hold off a while, and see what else can be learned.

IIRC, the MOW cabooses have always been issued only in those sets. The rarity is likely debatable, since the sets are widely available. I'm sure someone has a price guide indicating they are worth a lot, but it really comes down to finding out what someone will buy it for today. If it were me, I would gladly trade it for one of Atlas's outstanding Northern Pacific cabeese like this:

eBay is always a great place to check what the going price of an item is. You can also find people with more money than brains there which is also good when you are selling stuff.

    Hello Bill,

Go to the website N scale collector, the Micro trains/kaydee experts are their ready with answers. Some of these cabeese can bring you some pretty good cash, where you can run back to the hobby shop and buy more mundan goodies. Email them, with the name on the caboose, item number, etc etc Dont run it until you find out, don't take it out of the package. they are finatic. If you already have make sure theres no fingerprints on it.
