I've looked and cannot find photos of mechanical refrigerator cars' roofs. I'm curious if there was a smoke stack on these cars, or did the exhaust simply wander out through the side panels? I would suspect there was a stack, even if only a couple inches above the roof, but cannot find documentation. I'm talking about the 50'+ mech reefers of the mid-sixties and later, with the onboard reefer unit inside one end. I've modeled a few cars with a scale but short stack, but is that accurate? Thanks!
Attention Mr. Cruise... message at reception.... Kel may be able to help here. Also, have a look at his Molocova Model Works N catalog(ue), eighth item down. It may be an alternative for dressing up your reefers.
Yes, they have small stacks. On cars with their as-built gensets (not the trailer-style retrofits), the stack is on the roof, on the end where the engine is located. You can see it on the near end of the car here: http://www.trainweb.org/arkansastrains/railroad/upfe/UPFE461841/DSC02642.htm
Thank you both. Hey, that's the picture I was looking for! That's just about as I imagined, perhaps a bit smaller. I couldn't find any photos that were helpful. OK, now to break out the styrene...
