I have mitt full of old MDC car kits but I've found the assembly instructions for the knuckle couplers to be wholly inadequate for my understanding. I haven't a clue as to what to do with the spring (and I am not in favour of shooting them thither and yon about the house. There are no local resources here that would allow me to upgrade these babies to something better. Can someone direct me to a decent explanation? something with a diagram, perhaps? I've searched extensively with no success. Thanks!

Using foggy memories from about 15 years ago, the installation procedure should go something like this:
    1. Place spring in coupler pocket so that the spring is in line with the train.
    2. Turn the coupler 90 degrees from the operating position.
    3. Push the coupler into the pocket carefully compressing the spring. The "T" on the end of the coupler should be inside the coupler box.
    4. Rotate the coupler 90 degrees to the operating position.

If you have a car with the old Rapido style couplers, look at how they fit. The MDC coupler works the same way, but with a knuckle.

Installing couplers was not difficult. The bad news is I was very unhappy with the performance of the couplers and ended up replacing them with MT. I have special words for the MDC coupler but they are not permitted on the forum.

    Hope this helps!

Thank you for this! As it happens, she who prepares my meals so well for me and builds lovely trestles, actually figured out the assembly process on her own - I was able to provide her with a wheelset that inlude a coupler and she kept at it until she had it down pat. Alls well!
