Anyone know when Mass Central bought this GP9R (GP10). It looks ex-conrail from their first batch of Paduchah geeps.

My target is 1991-1998. The photo is from 2004. I know they were also using a CF7, but thats a bit tough to kitbash. This will be a LLgp20 with Atlas shell. I asume the Phase 1 GP9 is apropriate. I'll chop the nose and add the LL GP20 cab with a devided front wondow. Still trying to figure out who makes the air-filter.

I know how i'm going to kitbash the engine, but i need info on when the prototype existed. I could not find data as to when Mass Central started using it.

I plan on kitbashing this, and adding an Alaska F7 that they were using in the mid 90's, but i want this to be an engine that was in use starting 92-94

I think this engine was a MILW rebuild. The MILW rebuilt some GP7's and 9"s into what they called "GP20's". I seem to recall that EMD was not happy about them using the GP20 model plates on them. If so, then they are not Paducah rebuilds, and it becomes a slightly different project. Note the raised number boards with the little slope down to the roof of the cab, as well as the unique air filter.

My guess is that it is a Paducah rebuild. Mid-South bought the line from Hattiesburg, MS to Gulfport, MS from the Illinois Central in 1986. The sale included a half dozen Paducah rebuild GP-10's that look just like this one. The -10's are still working freights between Gulfport and Jackson, MS, northbound on M-W-F, and southbound on T-T-S....resting on Sundays.

I'll try to get some photos in the next few days, assuming I'm not shot for pointing a camera at a bunch of locomotives a 1/4 mile away from a Federal Highway...

MCER 960 is former MILW 960 which is a rebuilt (in 07/73) GP20 (as stated, MILWs designation, as they were 2000hp) from MILW GP9 239 ( built as MILW 2389 11/54.)

Sold to MCER on 02/85, prior to the Soo/MILW merger.

Supposedly it was sold to GATX in 08/90, but this may have been a paper arrangment
(similar to the FURX owned but NS painted 5500 GP38-2s)

ok i belive this is an ex mlw unit that was bought prior to 98, so the project is a go.

Now, the hood seems to be at a bit of an angle. should i use the gp20 hood or cur down the tall gp 9 hood?

If the hood is at an angle, use the GP20 hood.

the horst air filters are now in production by the molvokia (sp.?) works. should fit the paducahs nicely. saw them listed in the newest n scale mag. looks interesting. have any of you completed the kit bash of the GP/9 to the LLGP20 frame? what mods did you have to do to the sill? thanks.

The Horst filters may fit the Peducah rebuilds nicely, but the MILW rebuilds used a slightly different filter and the Horst is only a good starting point for a model. I'm glad to see them in production, because at least we now have a good starting point!

More yoke style filters should be ready next month, including the types MILW modelers need.

Check www.mocalovamodelworks.com for a photo of the filter.

I need those for an Amtrak engine, so they are on the list.

I got my Amtrak style filters from Mocalova Model Works last night.

Thanks, Kel. You did a great job on them.

I don't have any excuses for not getting started on those two GP10s now.

Glad you liked them. Hope the other stuff comes in handy as well.

And yes, you have no excuse now.
