well, run the most coarse sand psper you can find over them, and with a hobby knife, make slits in various places and add a little migging chunk of bark out of it in a couple places, then paint lightly.

Why not use real wood? Oddly enough it looks like wood "right out of the box".

Take a walk and keep your eye out for twigs about the right diameter that remain relatively straight for a few inches. Some bushes and shrubs make better looking logs than do most trees. I find that Elderberry looks quite good but other shrubs look good too.

Keep in mind that the color of the bark look "natural" for a real log.

An even better thing to do (particularly around this time of year) is to wait until people begin throwing away their christmas trees....these have many long slender branches that are the right size for pulpwood. I have a friend who loads up the back of his truck every January and has enough pulpwood to last forever. If you don't want to act like a garbage-picker I have also heard of success in buying trees from vendors the day after Christmas. Many of these people would take a loss on those trees and would gladly sell you them for pennies. The used ones have the advantage of already being dried out, having been indoors for nearly a month.

Thanks guys. The question really should have stated; What painting tricks do you use on plastic so as to simulate wood? Plastic wooden structures, loading docks, etc in many cases look like painted plastic rather then painted wood. Thanks.

I have had some luck with wood stain. Brush it on the plastic and wipe with a cloth. Takes a bit of experimenting but looks ok. Different stain colours give different results and I sometimes put on over the other to get what I want. My favourite is golden oak. Spray with a mat sealer to keep the stain from rubbing off when it has the look you want
