Joe and Torsja, The trailers look great. Just as a side ba the December Issue of Keystone Modeler has a good article on the Pennsy's TrucTrain flatcars and "circus style" loading yards. http://www.prrths.com/Keystone20Modeler/Keystone_Modeler.htm Dan S.
Here's a shot of a few of the first castings. These are done under pressure and using paintable mold release to pop any surface bubbles so patching is at a minimum. I will make 6 "master castings", clean those up and then make a multi cavity mold to make these in mass. Joe MTL
Hey Joe, those trailers look great! It would be real cool if you can kick a couple masters to your resin guy, and have them made into a kit for Loren to sell? I can use a few for my NP TOFC's
Joe, What material did you make the "original" master out of? The castings look great. I just bought a pressure pot, but haven't had a chance to use it yet. Dan S.
The master is all styrene. I blocked up the basic shape and sanded the rounded end on a low rpm disc sander from Micro-Mark,cleaned it up and then using.005 styrene sheet and Plastruct .010 styrene square stock , built it up. You just have to pay attention to the geometry to keep things all lined up. The wheels were turned out of Plastruct Styrene rod and the glued on. I cast these upside down so I could cast the underframe in place. The forward legs will be photo etched when I do the Fire Escapes for the building. Joe MTL
Robert, Tonight Steve, Joe and I shared a meal and we viewed these trailers. These are very nice and I made the same comment to Joe. "Get these done and we'll sell them for you." If Joe didn't have to do all the other crud of life, he could really crank. I'll keep reminding him to get these things going soon. Singles or multi pack? Loren
Loren, I'd take a few also. I prefer the multi pack, as well. But, I guess it would depend on the definition of multi. Dan S.
I agree, do Multi Packs. Do some with the wheels up (find a tractor to "pull" them?) then another set with the wheels down (parked)! I'd like to see how the numbers/stickers/decals for the Passenger Cars turn out then have the modeler pick 4 of 12 numbers per set and change the number range for future sets?
The 2009 OSH calendar has an SP Black Widow A-B-A with trailer train cars, etc. on the cover. Are the trailers the ones you are "making" Joe? How about the color schemes? Correct in the painting? I would go for multipacks of 3 to 5 trailers and the same for the tractors. I would also set them as sets or just trailers or just tractors in multipacks. I am good for at least 6 trailers and 3 or 4 tractors. Lindley
Hi Lindley, Had to look that one up! Yes they are the correct colors for the era. The daylight schemes, orange and red you see back a few cars is what I'm doing on these round nose trailers...others showed up late 1950's in the silver with orange stripe.,..but those were mostly the more squared off trailers as in the photo. The one I just finished came in 22-35-40' options with flat beds as well with the rounded nose. The Daylight trailers were painted that color for only a few years, before the newer silver paint showed up. Even so, these were not repained and lasted well into the 1970's in mainline service...some still laying around here and there. Cheers Joe
