    Hello,
I have been flipping pages in the "B&O POWER" book and I found something quite interesting..... In the part of the book called "In The New Century" I seen under the title of "Smaller Lines" on page 75 of the book.

I found a very interesting subject of the B&O. It says Quote: "The B&O got its one and only Shay locomotive when it took over the Cheat Haven & Bruceton R.R. in 1928. Originally C.H.& B. #4, it became of all things, B&O #2596. It was only on the roster for about a year." Unquote

I never thought the B&O had a Shay at all. Does anyone have any other information on this one at all being that it wasn't rostered very long? I'm guessing its a 2 truck Shay if not 2 truck then a real small 3 truck. I'd wouldn't mind modeling this loco or even seeing a picture of it that I can study to find a close HO scale model to do as a proto-type. Or even if someone can describe it to me to an extent even would be appreciated as well. Thanks in advanced..

You know, I'm not sure. Construction #3354 (Western Maryland Railway) is shown as Cass Scenic Railroad #6.This being a thing I'm not real qualled on , my guess is yes. In existence, operable?, Cass,WV. Understand, my research only encompasses my visiting their website. (O.K. a little more) I wandered in there looking for information on Feather River Railway Shays, and found more than I bargained for. I'm stoked! Bobby

    Bos,
Where did you find that the B&O had 3 Shay's??? On a web site somewhere???? Let me know. I'm real interested in those. The Shay locomotives are my favorite steamers besides Mallets. Geared loco's are interesting yes but the Shay's.... I don't know how to explain it but They just caught my eye one time and now...... Well you know... Just interesting I guess. And my favorite as I said is the Western Maryland #6 180 ton 3 Truck Shay. But the B&O I didn't know know they had the one let alone 3!!!!!! I bought a Brass Shay from a friend that needed money for house taxes so I helped him out and bought it and its almost identical to the Western Maryland #6!!!! Thats the only thing thats wrong with it to be exactly like the #6 it needs painted so.... Its headed to the paint rack!

well, #6 was moved from the B&O museum in baltimore, and the state of WV sent two older shay locos (2-trucks) in trade, they are still in the Museum when I was there.anyway, Cass's #6 was th largest and the last shay ever built. it had 4 trucks and was built in 1950 (I think).
 just over last summer Cass bought a couple large shays from a shortline that ahd closed in Califonia and Washington (not DC).they will be #7 and #8 I think. There was a Hiesler #6 but that last I saw it (2 years ago) it was stripped of a few things, and was sitting out side the shops in the weeds. I can't recall this exactly (nor the #s) but CASS Senic Railroad leased a shay from a railroad in oregon, the State of WV and the shortline went to court, and I think the judge ruled that Cass owned the engine therefore didn't need to send the shay back to the railroad in Oregon. the oldest shay that is still operating in cass is #5 it was built in 1905  *that's 96 years old* and is is probably one of the biggest ones. there is a mianline that was abandoned by the Chessie system in the early 80's cass never used it a lot, but now the WVRA is repairing it to run fro Elkins,WV throught 2 excursion railroads (all incorporated into WVRA) to cass and continue southward.hope that' enough LOL !! :D

Hi,all. No matter how many miles it runs it won't be enough :D . I found out about "Shay Locomotives.com" while doing research on Feather River Railway.(the prototype my Siwini Railway is based on) I was jazzed when I heard (here on Trainboard) that Bachman was going to manufacture one at a price that would make it reachable, but then when I saw it my heart sank :( , I'd have to do a lot of scratchbuilding and I'm afraid it's beyond my ability. Still, I hear it's a great mechanism and probably the best chance I'll get of owning one. Meanwhile I still got a list of projects to do. Happy RR'ing, Bobby

    Bobby,
I bought a brass 3 Truck Shay 150 ton from a friend to model the Western Maryland #6. But I like the shay loco's so.. I'm going to buy a Bachmann 3 truck and I may end up making it a 4 truck and Western Maryland #5.

I got the knowledge to do this i'm possitive. But my first Shay project is the Brass one. The WM #6 is my most favorite Shay out of all of them anywhere and I even got it in brass so.... But the Bachmann one is a decent way to get started in the Shay modeling world yes. I just have this fansy at testing my skills. So for me to make the Bachmann Shay 4 truck I have to buy a bunch from bachmann as replacement parts and do a whole lotta scratchin my head and alot of kitbashing the water tenders together to make it longer and add the wheel gearing to the rear of the tender and then to connect it all up to the last original truck gearing but i'm into that type work so..... :D And after I decide wether or not i'm gonna do it then its the time to find all the materials i'm going to need and start yet another project to my own collection. But once I get pictures of the WM #5, 4 truck i'll see what "other" customizes i'll need to do as well. I'm sure it wouldn't be as easy as the bashing the 2 tenders together and i'm finished type thing. Theirs alot of differences between Shays and how they are different from each other. So in order for me to make/customize one I know theirs alot more details to look for and change besides just the extra length on the tender and the extra set of geared wheels.... :D

HI 7600EM_1,and all :D Making the Bachman model appear like FRR shay #3 wouldn't be as involved as what You've just outlined. Mainly I'd have to build a new cab, change the running board on the engineers side to the stepped version and add the steam pipe that runs from toward the front of the boiler to the cylinders. Then start looking at finer points ;) I guess technically not too difficult but I wonder if I'd ever actually do it or just be content to watch it work. Rock on, Bobby
