    Hi All,

I'm helping a friend build a Pure DC layout. The layout has 12 independent DC power blocks. Each block can be powered off or controlled by one of three power packs. This allows the layout to run up to 3 independent trains. Each power pack controls the direction and speed.

Due to older steam locos, my friend does not want the layout to be DCC; I've tried to persuade him.

we can use DCC components to accomplish my goals.

    I'm looking for 2 options.
    1. A good switch or rotary dial to install in the Layout Diagram
    2. A digital circuit that would allow me to do the same thing either via a switch or digital controller; possibly an Arduino or other device.
    Thanks

A simple way to get this done and I think the least expensive, would be to use single pole 6 position rotary break before make switches. Turned all the way left could be the off or zero position, with 1-4 being cabs or PP's, and the 5 and final position could be a dcc throttle if you wanted. They are available at many online retailers.
What I did was go down to home depot and get some ground buss bars, they come in many different styles and capacities. That way you can easily label your blocks and keep things a bit more simple.
I used 12 position switches for 9 cabs to wire up almost 50 blocks, works like a charm for going on 15 years.
I hope this helps you out.

Sounds like a fine solution Tom. With three cabs, I can't think of any other way.

    Hi Guys,

The current plan is to use rotary switches.

What I'm also looking for is the ability to create a digital circuit that could mimic the functionality of a rotary switch for each power district.

    Thanks
